I just read your piece on "Pierpont" WV and would like to correct/add information as follows: The town appears on several old maps spelled Pierpont and Pierpoint and was named for the banker Pierpont ( sometimes Pierpoint) Morgan. Pierpoint was a "paper town" ( laid out on a map ) created from the O'Neal family farm. The O'neals tried to hold on to the farm as Ritter Lumber, located a mile north on the Slab Fork, went after it to establish a town to house its employees who had outgrown the town of Maben ( formerly) Estelle, where the mill was located. The O'Neals lost most of their farm to the project when both they and a local land company produced deeds. A special commission was appointed to study the matter. The O'Neals retained a small portion of the farm located "on The Hill" and the two original settlers are buried just behind the " Cabin Creek Primitive Baptist Church" located what is now Apple Hill Road. Just below this church is O'Neal street which is named for them.
More maps than not showed the town as "Pierpont" but the residents called it Pierpoint. In the 1970"s a petition was signed by most town residents asking the governor to have the road sign spelling changed to PIERPOINT and shortly afterward the spelling was changed to match the spelling and pronunciation of the town residents. Not only did I , David "Bugs" Stover sign the petition but hand carried it to Charleston to present to the Governor!
I am currently the Circuit Clerk of Wyoming County and still a resident of Pierpoint! David "Bugs" Stover (304) 673-0796 bugstover@yahoo.com
