Naming conventions
[edit]Shouldn't this article's name be in English? If so, how does one go about changing the name, or would a redirect be more desirable? The name should be, in my opinion, Ossau Peak. The same problem with this article, Pic du Midi de Bigorre. ←Gee♥Alice 07:40, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
- That is a good question. In general, for places and other proper names, the English WP uses the name that would be most commonly used by an English language speaker. So where there is a well known English version of a French place name, we would use that. Thus we uses Brussels rather than Bruxelles or Brussel (I know that is in Belgium but I cannot think of a good French example off the top of my head). But where there isn't already a well known English name, we use the French name because that is likely to be what the average English speaker does. We should never be inventing our own translated proper names, which is what I suspect Ossau Peak is. -- Chris j wood (talk) 16:11, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- Quite true, I never came across this peak in English until I read it on Wikipedia, but in Spanish it is only known like this, in French. And on top of that, you forget about the "Midi" part, which is important for the name, so in any case it would be: "Middle of Ossau peak" which of course does not make sense at all.David (talk) 18:05, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Location?
[edit]The text of this article ('in the French Pyrenees.') contradicts the coordinates given (42.50N; 0.26W) which are a good 25km across the border into Spain. Can somebody correct one or the other. Thanks. -- Chris j wood (talk) 16:02, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- Further research shows it is definately in France, but I cannot determine exact location. So I've simply removed the spurious location. -- Chris j wood (talk) 13:28, 6 August 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.84.39.186 (talk)
- Summit Post lists the coordinates as 42.84320°N / 0.4358°W, which are near enough correct. I'll fix the article. --David Edgar (talk) 14:59, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
