Edward T. Cone remarks in his essay Schubert Criticizes Schubert (p. 146 of Hearing and Knowing Music: The Unpublished Essays of Edward T. Cone) that the development of the finale in its uncut version is not only completely self-sufficient (starting and ending with the Swedish melody in B minor), but also astonishingly outlines a sonata form in itself (where the first theme is the Swedish melody, the second is the cimbalom-theme in D minor, and both are recapitulated together in B minor).
