[edit]Given the emerging use of "Physicalization" in the context of Virtualization (it is a different approact to data center server management that flips the Virtualization model on its head) this page needs to become a disambiguation page, rather than a straight redirect to Physics.
Add historical section under physicalization
[edit]It seems like the current page does not include the historical development of data physicalization. I add this section and hope it can give readers more background knowledge
Bibliography
- This ancient artifact (also known as "Blombo ocher plaque") is more than 75000 years old and it is one of the oldest examples of abstract record of information. However, the encoded message cannot be fully interpreted. Several studies have tried to propose potential interpretations to the object.
- The information on Lebombo bone seems obvious. It is believe that the 29 distinct notches represent lunar cycles.
Around 8000 BCE, as agriculture began, a clay token system was spread across ancient Mesopotamia. Each token is enclosed inside a clay envelope and each physical entity represent one particular commodity such as a sheep or a pig. This forms a one-to-one correspondence relationship.
- From 3000 BCE to 17th century, a more complex information visualization system Quipus was widely used in numerical based 10 information encoding and calculation. Information is encoded based on the relative distance of knots, the color of the knots, and the type of knots.
- In 17th century, European engineers used Plan-relief in military defense and civic engineering. Architect build building models for designing and planning purpose.
- The Galton board can be one contemporary example of data physicalization. Specifically, it visualize the normal distribution curve
Since data physicalization is closely related to tangible user interface (TUI), other editors can, for example, include research projects in TUI field.

This article needs to be split
[edit]The initial purpose of this article was to describe the concept of computer physicalization (i.e. the use of actual physical hardware to replace virtual machines in performing multiple tasks). More recent additions, and the entire "History" section, refer to an entirely different concept of data physicalization, the process of creating physical models to represent data. These are two completely different concepts and have no business occupying the same article. I propose a split into two articles: Physicalization to cover the computer science topic, and Data physicalization to cover the data concept. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:46, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
- Done In the absence of any dissent, I have performed the split. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 22:17, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
