This article was created and/or written by its subject and therefore violates Wikipedia's Conflict of Interest rules. Moreover, it does not meet Wikipedia's notability requirements and omits relevant information about a controversial topic (http://www.allgov.com/usa/ca/news/appointments-and-resignations/embattled-state-fair-employment-and-housing-director-resigns-141006?news=854444). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.169.26.114 (talk) 06:28, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • @IP 76.169.26.114: This article does have problems... however, your request to delete an entire article based on errors and issues with the article goes against the core nature of WP, which is to BUILD an encyclopedia. The correct solution (the WP way) is to fix the errors, address the issues, and improve the article. In the same way your request for AfD has problems and rather than just "deleting" your request it is the WP way to help improve users' skills also. Here are some insights you may want to consider:
    • Your understanding of WP:COI is flawed. According to the COI page, which BTW is a Guideline and not a Policy, "COI editing is strongly discouraged." Note that the word is "discouraged", not "forbidden". In either case COI is not in-and-of-itself a valid reason for deleting an article.
    • Your assertion that the article "was created and/or written by its subject" needs support. What makes you say that? I see the username "pwcheng" made a few edits but that is hardly proof that pwcheng is in fact the Phyllis Cheng of this article. I can create an account calling myself The Governator but that does not make me Arnold Schwarzenegger (of course my lack of an Austrian accent while typing is probably a giveaway). WP operates on the basis of facts, not opinons. If you have any evidence to support your assertion you should list it so that we all can understand your concerns and address the issue.
    • The particular edits by pwcheng are actually minor edits that fix the errors in facts such as her FEH Director status and changing "law degree" to "J.D. degree" along with other mostly grammatical changes. Again reading WP:COI we find guidance: "An exception to editing an article about yourself or someone you know is made if the article contains defamation or a serious error that needs to be corrected quickly.". The error of her status in office is certainly something that should be corrected quickly by anyone who can, including her.
    • Looking over the edit history it appears that many people have been involved in writing this article over a considerable amount of time. Saying this article was created/written by Cheng totally disrespects the efforts of all of the other editors who have worked on it.
    • You assert that the article "does not meet Wikipedia's notability requirements and omits relevant information about a controversial topic" but that argument is self-defeating. If the article is about a person involved in a controversy the inclusion of that controversy -- with FULL respect for the WP:V and WP:BLP Policies -- is likely to make the person MORE notable, not less. The solution is to improve the article by adding the missing information, not deleting the article.
  • I hope this is all helpful in your learning to be a more skilled contributor to WP. 104.32.193.6 (talk) 16:22, 21 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
