I don't think this is common in Europe, where I think telephones largely lack letters on their numbers (except for cellphones). Also, in Japan, they use a similar system with puns based onrough approximations on different number words... 惑乱 分からん 03:43, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
You are very correct. There was a problem with the letters on the phone keypads in the UK. A friend of mine was about to launch a reverse charge phone call service in the UK using the phone name 0800 REVERSE. When they realised a lot of the public phone key pads did not have letters on them, they had to help British Telecom update the keypads.
