Yes, it is from that hatchery's site and they have the same statement in their printed catalog. It's a nothing but a 'rare breed' marketing ploy. There is no such breed as the Phoenix in Japan, and never was. The closest breed they have to it is actually the Shokoku, but it has yellow legs, red ear lobes, and carries a less reliable version of the non-molting gene than the Onagadori. While the Phoenix has slate/blue legs, white ear lobes, and molts regularly.

Most poultry people can easily tell the breed differences just by appearance, let alone the differences in genetics that are apparent when breeding the various breeds of fowl.

The statement about the single combs makes no sense at all. It actually one thing that the breeds share in common. Most long-tail fowl are single combed. The only exceptions being the walnut-combed Minohiki, the pea-combed Sumatra and Yokohama.

The above information is very inaccurate. There is not and never has been any breed in Japan by the name "Phoenix".

The Phoenix is a breed of chicken that was developed in Europe in the 19th century. It was derived from crosses involving Onagadori (a Japanese breed), Leghorn, and Modern Game breeds.

Only a small part of its genetic make-up is Japanese. Being that it was developed and standardized in Europe, it should be considered a European breed.

It was later (and to this day) further refined in the U.S.

This is grossly inaccurate, "Historically, the tail could reach 15–20 feet; the only breed of chicken that can grow such a tail today is the Onagadori."

The Phoenix always has had a tail length of 3-5 Ft. The Phoenix never was capable of growing a 15-20 Ft tail. That belongs, and always has belonged, only to the Onagadori.

It's important not to confuse these two breeds. They are quite different in about every way - tail length, feather type, body type, carriage, etc.

They are especially different in the genetics that control the growth and fullness of the tail plumage. Phoenix are Gt/Gt Mt+/Mt+. While Onagadori are Gt/Gt mt/mt Mf/Mf.

This basically comes down to the fact that the Phoenix molts its tail feathers regularly each year. While the Onagadori retains its tail feathers for 4 years or longer. During which period they remain in a state of constant growth, or blood-feather.

"Its colour is an unusual combination of silver and black."

This color is not "unusual". In fact, it's quite common. Many breeds of chicken are this color. It's a color referred to as "Silver duckwing". It is not an unusual, unique, distinct, or rare color pattern. There are also other colors of Phoenix such as red duckwing (black-breasted red) and gold duckwing. Catagories other than duckwing colors also exist. Some being pyle and dunn colorations. Even recessive white.

"There has been confusion as to the proper name for this breed. Most generally accept the single comb birds as the Phoenix."

Both the Phoenix and the Onagadori have single combs, as do many other breeds of chicken. The comb type is about the only thing that does not differ between the breeds.

In closing, the final thoughts should be:

Phoenix are not and never have been Onagadori.

And Onagadori are not and never have been Phoenix.

I wish people would stop perpetuating the confusion between these two quite distinct breeds.
