Military Status

Mandarin Wikipedia (zh:杨魏玲花) and countless Mandarin blogs and BBSs state that Phoenix Fantasy are part of the PLA's art troupe system. I have tried to find a reliable source and the best I can get is this semi-official Sina blog of IB Times, citing a report on their website which is blocked here in the Mainland. If any editor can confirm the original IB Times, please edit the reference. The IB Times has a hidden agenda but not one that is likely to affect their coverage of Mandopop!
