I spoke last night on your talk page. The great work done under my watch for Talk:Eric Hosmer/GA1 reminds me that there must be more stuff out there on Humber. I would say it is not possible that the current version of the article passes WP:WIAGA for completeness. Various types of stories must exist:
  • Type 1A — Rice University announces that it has signed Philip Humber: Since baseball is a Spring sport I am a bit sketchy on what this might say. This guy could be the baseball equivalent of Anthony Davis who was a non-notable player before his senior season. This story might be trivial. However, it is more likely that the story goes something like this: (either something like November X 2000 or April X 2001, Houston, TX) Philip Humber has just signed a national letter of intent to attend Rice University. As a junior, Humber was an All-State selection by the Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, Texas Sportswriters Association and/or Texas Baseball Coaches Association. He is a Preseason All-American by such and such. As a junior his stats were such and such
  • Type 1B — Rice University announces that signee Philip Humber has just been named Texas High School Class 4A player of the year: (June X 2001, Houston, Texas) Philip Humber, who has led Carthage High School to the Texas Class 4A state title, was named Texas Class 4A player of the year by Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, Texas Sportswriters Association and/or Texas Baseball Coaches Association. Humber has also been named All-American by x, y and z. He was a unanimous first team All-State selection by X, Y and Z as a senior and a third team selection aa a Junior. Yada, yada, yada.
  • Type 1C — Rice University baseball class of 2001 announced as the 12 ranked recruiting class in the nation: The class of 2001 includes three of the top pitching prospects in the state and the country. Humber has accomplished (see above)
  • Type 2 — 2001 Texas High School Player of the Year Philip Humber lead's Houston, Texas' Rice University to 2003 College World Series victory giving Rice its first national championship in any sport. The story would go something like this: "He got his first glove at age 6 from such and such relative. His mom and dad drove him to whatever league every practice, until he could be trusted to bicycle there himself. They watched all his games and took him to batting cages to help him develop. By the time he was 12 he was playing against 14 year olds. He played varsity as a freshman. As a sophomore he was first team All-County and honorable mention All-State..."
  • Type 3A/B — East Texas'/Rice University's very own Philip Humber tosses MLB's 21st perfect game. Similar biographical content to Type 2.
My thinking is that Rice University (Athletic Department/Sports Information Office, Library or School Newspaper) might be able to direct us. Also, Houston Public Library might be able to help. Also, stories like these from a slightly different perspective my exist in his hometown newspapers. We just need to know what newspapers have high circulation in Carthage. Since we found his state POY content in the Temple Daily Telegram, we know that there must be a lot of Texas newspapers that have run stories on the guy. Sometimes, the university will keep up a page. For instance, Rice has an alumni site here that likely has more info on Humber. Already I found a [posttrib.suntimes.com/sports/12055801-556/humbers-pregnant-wife-thrilled-as-she-watches-from-home.html Sun-Times article on his wife] that will beef up the "Personal life" section. I'm busy today, and likely not able to do too much more until tomorrow. We can check the online archives of the Temple Daily Telegram, but if we're not on the ground in Carthage, Texas, how do you expect to access their library? I don't know that we'd be able to access local East Texas like that from where we are, unless the newspapers digitally archive. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:31, 25 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Spoke to the Sammy Brown Library in Carthage (Panola County, Texas). They told me to search the The Panola Watchman and the Longview News-Journal for local coverage. Spoke with the Longview News-Journal sports editor. He emailed me two stories. We are now in doubt that Carthage won the state title in 2001. The source may have misinterpreted the his success at pitching the team to the state championships as a state championship win. Here are my comments:

  • "He has pitched for the New York Mets (2006–2007), Minnesota Twins (2008–2009), Kansas City Royals (2010), and White Sox (2011–present)." I don't think the dates are necessary in the lead, just the teams suffice and the dates are in the infobox.
  • "Although he debuted in the Major Leagues " lowercase major leagues; only capitalized when directly referring to MLB. Four instances need to be fixed total, many others are fine as is.
  • "Humber was raised with a batting cage in his back yard in an area" backyard is one word.
  • "a son who will be named John Gregory." has the wife had the baby? Sources suggest this to be likely given their expected date, so double-check.

Here's the issues from the amateur section:

  • "The Carthage Bulldogs have a strong winning tradition and had won the state title in 1990 and been one of the final four teams in the state tournament in 1994." The strong winning tradition feels a bit pov; reword so it works a bit better, since it feels slightly out of place in the rest of the paragraph. I'm not opposed to the sentence being removed completely but I can understand why it would merit inclusion.
  • "As a junior, he went 7–2. Then as a senior he posted a 13–1 record with a 0.90 ERA and 146 strikeouts as well as a .371 batting average with 6 home runs" These two sentences can be combined.
  • "Although, Carthage lost the state championship " no comma needed
  • "choosing instead to attend Rice University, in order" no comma
  • "as Rice won its first national championship (in any team sport, not just baseball)" the parentheses can be removed and it can just say Rice won its first national championship in any team sport. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 17:43, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • "a 2.37 ERA in 7 starts" seven
  • "On July 31, 2006, 377 days after his surgery," a year would probably sounds better, though I understand the desire for accuracy here.
  • "August 22, when he entered the ninth inning without giving a hit to" rm comma, plus 'without allowing a hit' sounds better.
  • "With Humber struggling at the start of the 2009 season, pitching to a 12.46 ERA over 4 1⁄3 innings, while giving up 11 hits and walking four batters, the Twins designated Humber for assignment on April 17, 2009 to make room on their roster for Juan Morillo, who the Twins had claimed off waivers from the Colorado Rockies." this sentence feels a bit long winded and could probably be split in two after batters,.
  • "after he pitched to" Capitalize After.
  • "He allowed 20 runs in his next three starts, across 13 1⁄3 innings." rm comma

The pro section was more of a cursory review rather than in-depth like the other sections, but I imagine the peer review will catch anything I missed.
