Pitches
[edit]Anyone have citations for the pitching section? "Good late life", "late bite", "much improved", etc. are very subjective. --Zarek 00:23, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
- I removed them. If someone finds a source (such as a player interview with those exact words, or other descriptive terms, feel free to add them. Try not to add subjective information without a source. Leebo T/C 16:32, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Move to Phil Hughes?
[edit]More and more I am seeing him referred to as "Phil Hughes" in all media. Should the page be changed? - RPIRED 18:15, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- Let's wait a little while so we can talk to more editors. After tonight, there's sure to be more interest in him. If there's a consensus, we'll move the page. Leebo T/C 18:17, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hughes says that he likes to be refered to as Phil, and during Spring Training the YES announcers called him as such. -NyyDave 18:35, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
- I'd say we can go ahead and move it. Just about everything I heard last night was Phil and not Philip. If there are no objections, I'll move the page in a few hours. Leebo T/C 12:26, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- Agree - Should move to "Phil" - Mitico 17:22, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- I put in the request to have it moved at requested moves, since Phil Hughes already redirects here. Leebo T/C 12:47, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure if that's a good idea though - I think he's still listed by Major League Baseball as "Philip Hughes". If that's the case, it should be left alone. (Jmdefrancesco 14:48, 31 May 2007 (UTC))
Trivia Section
[edit]This section is real awkward. Baskin Robbins -- who cares? I would suggest that this whole section be removed in accordance with WP:TRIV. There are some good quotes in this section. I suggest adding a quote section and avoid the clutter? -Mitico 17:22, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
- If you look back in the article history, the trivia item in question used to read like this: "During the 2003 ALCS, Hughes had a high school job at Baskin Robbins, and had to work that night. He kept calling his mom to check the score.[1]" until someone stripped it to just the Baskin Robbins line. I can see why the other info was removed, but the whole line should have been removed. I would prefer distributing the most relevant info in the Trivia section to the prose of the other parts of the article. Leebo T/C 18:51, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
Greg "Opie" Hughes just mentioned on the "Opie and Anthony" show that he and Phil Hughes are cousins. Can we put that into the trivia section?
It should also be noted that Hughes was a Red Sox fan (even in California) according to his 2004 Topps Prospects Card (card number not available at this time.) (Jmdefrancesco 14:50, 31 May 2007 (UTC))
Standing ovation?
[edit]I remember listening to the game, and hearing that Hughes received a standing ovation when he was pulled from the game. I spent a little time looking online, and couldn't find a reference to this. It says a lot when the home team applauds the performance of a visiting team's pitcher, and certainly demonstrates the Hall potential of this performance. Does anyone have a reference to this?
Isn't it ironic? No...
[edit]"Ironically, the youngest person on the Yankees roster (Hughes, 21) replaced the oldest person on the roster (Roger Clemens, 45) when Clemens left with a hamstring injury."
I could spend several days making this correction through Wikipedia.
a) That is not irony. b) To call it "ironic" is a value judgment, thus unsuitable for an encyclopedic entry. --Jrshooter (talk) 23:19, 19 March 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jrshooter (talk • contribs) 23:14, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

MLBtraderumors.com
[edit]Is this a valid page for a reference? Should it be removed as a reference from this page? It seems like a blog to me. Anyone else want to weigh in? Philatio (talk) 05:25, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- MLB Trade Rumors is a collection of references and unsourced speculation. The stories they cite should be cited here, and their unsourced speculation shouldn't be in an article. --Muboshgu (talk) 17:55, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
- Agree.--Epeefleche (talk) 04:00, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
Orphaned references in Phil Hughes
[edit]I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Phil Hughes's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT⚡ 23:44, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Uniform Number
[edit]Can anyone find a source for the reason why Hughes wears the number 65? I have been looking for a while, but I cannot seem to find that information. Also, can anyone find out why he switched to 34 before deciding to return to 65 in 2008? If this information cannot be found, it would probably be best to remove the information about his number from the article. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 13:16, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
- From my memory, he originally wanted a number ending in 5 (which I believe is because he had worn #35 in high school), but #65 was the lowest available. Then he went with #34 for a short while when he figured he had "made it" and shouldn't be wearing a spring training number any longer, but he struggled, and superstitiously went back to #65. There should be sources backing that up. If not, I'd be curious to see how I came to remember that. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:23, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
- You're probably right, but I just can't seem to find a source that mentions this. I've checked Google, the Yankees' website, YES Network's website, the New York Times, and the New York Daily News, all without results. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 12:54, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Since no one has found a source to verify the uniform number information, I am removing it from the article. If a source is found, then it can be replaced, but only if a source is found. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 12:16, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm going to be reviewing within the next few days. —Bloom6132 (talk) 05:46, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Some initial thoughts –
- Ref 84 should be replaced, since WordPress.com is a blog (and thus, not really a reliable source).
- I know that blogs normally are unreliable sources of information, but this one was written by Hughes himself. Shouldn't that make it an exception? Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 10:43, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'll make an exception. This is, after all, GAC and not the above-the-ceiling criteria of FAC. —Bloom6132 (talk) 15:24, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
For MLB sources (MLB.com, Yankees.MLB.com, miib.com, etc.), the work should be MLB.com, while the publisher should be MLB Advanced Media (per recently-promoted baseball FL lists Tip O'Neill Award and List of Major League Baseball pitchers who have struck out three batters on nine pitches)- "…in only his second MLB start. However, injury cut short his start…" – the second "start" sounds confusing. I know you mean the start of Hughes' career, but non-baseball readers might think his no-hitter game was cut short.
- His no-hitter game was cut short. That's what I meant. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 10:43, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
- Oops. Now that I've read about that in the article, sorry about the misunderstanding. —Bloom6132 (talk) 15:24, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Ref 4, 5, 25, 31, 41, 47, 60, 61, 73 and 77 should have Sports Reference LLC as the publisher. This is to ensure consistency with refs 53–56.—Bloom6132 (talk) 09:12, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
- Everything looks good to go. Passing the article. Good job! —Bloom6132 (talk) 15:27, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Free Agency
[edit]Just to inform those who are quick to change the template the standard procedures. Anytime a player agrees to a contract signing or trade it's good to wait until it is finalised. Players will always go through a doctor's checkup to make sure they are healthy to play before they actually sign the deal. Thanks. NintendoFan (Talk, Contribs) 10:14, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
