Notability

Notability is very thin here. Almost no mention of him in the main climbing media and climbing journals. He refs are low-grade blogs that talk about Everest ascents. Had some mentions from a serious accident on Everest, but just passing mentions in his role as rescuer. He knows Mark Horrell (who is not notable), who mentions him in his book and blog. However, xero-SIGCOV in UK main newsapers (i.e. he is not notable on a UK level), and zero-SIGCOV in the main climbing magazines/journals (i.e. he is not a notable climber). I found zero WP:SIGCOV on this person. He does get namechecked for his role in rescues but never anything of any substance apart from a mention on the Himalayan Times website when he summitted Everest 10 times (here) but still brief. He never appears in any climbing magazines or climbing books (per WP:NCLIMBER), so is not an internationally notable climber. Aszx5000 (talk) 16:00, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

Proposed deletion

I removed the notice proposing deletion and added additional citations. This is an article about a well-known commercial mountaineering operator. Climbing magazines don't tend to report on commercial mountaineering operators; their emphasis is on alpine-style climbing, unguided on new routes. You will see there are references from Lincoln Hall's and Nick Heil's books instead.

I have also added the report from this year's Himalayan Times covering Crampton's 10th ascent of Everest. This is a notable achievement in its own right and puts him in a small group of only a handful of non-Sherpa mountaineers who have climbed Everest ten times or more. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aozza42 (talk • contribs) 18:35, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

As per my post above, the Himalayan Times website short article noting his 10th ascent is effectively the on RS on this person. If he is well known, then there should be SIGCOV articles on him in leading RS (UK-based or other). There is effectively noting on him in the climbing media, so he is not notable to them as a climber. Therefore, what is his notability (apart from getting namechecked for being involved in the rescue of some of his clients)? Aszx5000 (talk) 18:45, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

As I noted above, the climbing media don't tend to report on commercial ascents of Everest. This is left to other sources. For example, Alan Arnette's blog (also cited) probably has more readers than most climbing magazines and is one of the most highly respected sources for contemporary Everest news. Blogs are not RS. Companies who run commercial expeditions are not inherently notable, and nor do they make their owners inherently notable. The issue here is that there is really no RS supporting the subject's GNG (outside of the HT noting his 10th ascent, but we have people approaching their 30th ascent on Everest, so that is why the general climbing media has ignored Phil). Alan Arnette's blog is not notable (and neither is Alan), and is full of factually incorrect things and shout-outs for Alan's friends and pet projects. I can't see how Phil (or his company) meets GNG, and I can't see Phil's BLP lasting on WP unless we find SIGCOV. Aszx5000 (talk) 20:07, 28 May 2023 (UTC)
