SSM is a mechanism which causes slipped strand mispairing between the mother and daughter strands. A genes is phase variationistic if it is able to switch between two phenotypes in a reversible manner. It switches surface antigens. This slipped strand mispairing occurs during DNA synthesis, which happens in DNA replication or DNA repair. It can happen to the leading or lagging strand at the repeat region. The gens is affected if the location is in transcription or translation.
Common genetic strategy
