Potential sources

[edit]

A holding tank of potential sources for when I or some other editor wishes to improve the article, cause I cannot do it now personally. -- The Red Pen of Doom 20:28, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested correction to plot

[edit]

I have a minor suggestion for the plot summary (assuming it's retained in detail in future versions). The wooden idol that Anodos destroys covers "a great hole", out of which "rushed a great brute like a wolf, but twice the size," killing Anodos--also with an implication that "youths" were being sacrificed to the monster. 98.148.99.115 (talk) 00:08, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Anodos as name

[edit]

I don't think it's correct that "Anodos" is the Greek for "pathless". ᾰ̓́νοδος (from ἀνά (“up”) +‎ ὁδός (“way, road”)) means "way up, ascent, climb". I don't know where the "pathless" idea comes from. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.2.63.235 (talk) 16:36, 10 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. Ichnilatis (talk) 13:38, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"ἄνοδος" in the meaning "pathless" is from alpha-privative attached to "ὁδός" - when alpha privative is prefixed to a word beginning with a vowel a nu is introduced for euphony. Both meanings are listed in the LSJ. I don't know if there's evidence that MacDonald had only one or the other in mind. 2600:1700:3698:6A10:514A:2E1C:50CB:AD4C (talk) 20:09, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
