Focus of Article

[edit]

In my opinion this article is unnecessarily focussed in on one historical period of this nations past, after they left their homeland. There are a fair number of archaeological and historical materials available in the literature to expand this article in such a way as to reflect that knowledge. At present I don't have access to the proper research materials in order to accomplish this, but will do so in the near future. In passing, "Petun" is a name that was given this nation by Europeans and is believed to be derived from a Portuguese word for tobacco. "Tionontati" (many alternate spellings) does not mean "Tobacco People", it is an Iroquoian (Wyandot?) term meaning something like "mountain dwellers", in reference to the presence in their homeland of the Niagara escarpment. Again, when I regain access to my research resources, I will change this and provide a proper citation. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 15:03, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That was a quote from W. M. Darlington of Pennsylvania about one hundred years ago. I don't think he is living any more. It's not worth debate. Just change and word as you see fit. I'm busy with other matters. Or, delete as needed to your citations. cheers Conaughy (talk) 15:24, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Forgot to mention the citation:
American Antiquarian Society Transactions," Vol. I, p. 271-2; id. Vol. II, p. 72. Charlevoix's "History of New France
Please remove whatever citation is not good enough. I mean no disrespect to that Society, those folks out Indiana way... cheers Conaughy (talk) 15:28, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please disregard what I thought was helpful. The article is reverted back to Kevin Myers's original version. cheers Conaughy (talk) 16:06, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the moment to fix the old questionables, Deconstructhis. It does read much better now. Perhaps the expert attention banner might be removed, now? Or, maybe one of their decendants could add more details. Perhaps a history section could be added, all my notes and citation will be late rather than earlier, an over view as to why an element or two arrived on the Ohio Valley. I'm not related to any of those folks though nor up your way. cheers and best to you Conaughy (talk) 01:02, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Historical Iroquoian peoples section

[edit]

What is the relevance of this section to the specific topic of the Petun? It doesn't seem like it serves any purpose in the article other than providing a general reference, which is already served better by articles such as Iroquois. I would suggest that it be removed as filler. Julius177 (talk) 18:43, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
