Geography

In the episode "Bobbie Jo and the Beatnik" (with Dennis Hopper!) the distance from the Shady Rest hotel to Hooterville is mentioned as 20 miles. Additionally, Bobbie Jo tells Alan Landman that they walked for 4 hours from Hooterville, which at a 5 mile/hour pace works out to about 20 miles. The article currently places the Shady Rest 25 miles from both Hooterville and Pixley without supporting this with references. I understand that this is a fabricated universe in a television show, but is there evidence that declares this 25 mile distance? It helps to understand why they were so dependent on the railroad for their livelihood. Boteman (talk) 12:34, 3 February 2012 (UTC)

In some cases, the producers of the three linked shows (Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and The Beverly Hillbillies) were purposely inconsistent, especially in Green Acres. Also five miles per hour is not something I'd consider walking speed, which is typically much slower. Preferred_walking_speed puts the average at 3.1 miles per hour. Steam engines have to take on water every so many miles. The Shady Rest is at a water stop along the railroad equally distant from the next two towns in each direction. Though the distance varied depending on the era and the train, 25 miles isn't that far off from what it could have been for the particular train and the particular time. Water stops sometimes developed into communities or even towns. Other times (like the Shady Rest), they didn't. But standalone businesses could be created at isolated "water stops" because the train would have to stop there. 207.183.166.8 (talk) 03:31, 7 February 2016 (UTC)

In episode 64 (season two episode 26) engineer Charlie Pratt says that the Shady Rest Hotel is 25 miles from Sam Drucker's store Saps48 (talk) 15:46, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

Copyrights

Article says: "Many of the black-and-white episodes are now in the public domain, their copyrights having lapsed" That can't be true, it's much too recent. (I can't believe I'm posting about Petticoat Junction!) --GangofOne 22:07, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

With many TV series (I don't know if the law has changed now), copyright had to be renewed every 27 years. Between 1990 and 1992, Filmways did not renew their copyright contract with the show and the episodes, and they went into the public domain. Mike H. But it is true. There are many cheapo public domain DVDs of the show, with a theme song change, because a) the theme song remains under copyright while b) the actual program content copyright lasped. Other examples include episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Lucy Show". Jude86 03:28, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
Most of the black-and-white episodes are in the public domain, however CBS does own the rights to the original 35 mm. prints and did release two official DVD boxsets Matthew Cantrell (talk) 05:18, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Motel?

Even though the article and the first section states Shady Rest Hotel, the picture and the following section state Shady Rest Motel. I've never seen the show, so which is it? RockRNC 23:26, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

That's not an "M" in the picture. It's a stylized "H."

I removed "The "junction" in the title may refer to the Shady Rest Hotel, situated at a crossing of two train lines (though only one is ever mentioned or shown on maps)."

As the statement says, no mention of a second rail line existing near the Shady Rest is ever mentioned. There's no evidence of the Shady Rest stop being situated at a junction with another rail line, so its odd someone bothered including that statement since it starts out by saying its situated at a junction, and then states there's no evidence supporting that it's situated at a junction, lol.

Since there is never any indication of a junction during the course of the show, we have to assime it just made for a nice sounding title or referred to the central role the Shady Rest Hotel seems to play in life in the valley in the show (With Sam Drucker's store also playing a similar role). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.71.220.47 (talk) 08:07, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Added an external link to the public domain episodes viewable at Archive.org (looks like there are seven of them presently), but it was removed as "not necessary". If other editors are so inclined, I would support its re-inclusion. HeLmiT (talk) 23:14, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Citation Needed for Ratings & Cancellation Information

There's an entire paragraph that refers to the show's eventual ratings decline and cancellation. It says that CBS planned to cancel it at the end of the 1968-69 season, but relented after deciding another season of episodes would make the show more valuable in syndication. Then, it says CBS finally did cancel it one year later, at the end of the 1969-70 season, despite an improvement in ratings. All of this is fascinating reading, and I have no proof it's false. But no sources of any kind are cited. Thus, I can't prove it's true either. I would love it if the original author would provide some sources. I don't know if there is any hard evidence of CBS wanting to cancel the show, but in Daily Variety there were a couple of references to CBS ordering 6 or so segments at a time--this is done only if they're not sure if they want a whole season. References to Bea Benaderet's passing

In one of the episodes after she passed away, they give her room to a special guest (I presume it's her room, at least) calling it the "Kate Bradley Memorial Suite".

Bradley Memorial Suite" I've seen all of season 7, and there's no mention of the name Kate BRadley at all" Millard P. Bradley was probably the founder of The Shady Rest, and he was likely the great grandfather of Kate's late Husband. That's the room you're thinking of. It was me who removed the "Kate Bradley Memorial Suite" since there was no such room. The episode you're thinking of is the one where Selma Plout gets whiplash wants to sue Uncle Joe. Production and Distribution companies

Production-wise Petticoat Junction was produced by Wayfilms, Inc., which itself was a joint venture between Filmways Television and Pen-Ten Productions. After it's cancellation the show was distributed by Viacom Enterprises til 1995, later by Paramount Domestic Television and currently by CBS Television Distribution. Filmways Television wasn't the distributor for the show, had that been the case it would be owned by MGM today. Matthew Cantrell (talk) 05:16, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Removed unsourced Hooterville and Pixley reference

I removed the below:

The characters "seem" to go to Hooterville for some goods and services, including high school and the hospital, but prefer Pixley for supermarket shopping, beauty parlors, and movies.{{citation needed|date=March 2015}}:

I understand that this could have been given more time to be verified. However, it doesn't seem to hold up. First, it doesn't say which characters; second, "seem" is an opinion; third, the characters who live at the Shady Rest often debate about whether they prefer Hooterville or Pixley; fourth, Kate Bradley usually shops at Sam's in Hooterville (they are often identified as friends); fifth, I don't think Hooterville even has a movie theater.
