Name of series

[edit]

A source for calling this the Peter Grant Series rather than the rivers of London series is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/5b31i1/i_am_ben_aaronovitch_author_of_the_peter_grant/ in the author's own words. Yes, I know, not a good source per wikipedia rules, but I thought it helpful.

Also in the reddit AMA referenced above, the additional short stories The Domestic; The Cockpit; The Loneliness of the Long Distance Granny; and The Home Crowd Advantage could/should be added to the article. A source for "The Home Crowd Advantage" could be: https://www.goodreads.com/series/51937-peter-grant-rivers-of-london Benthatsme (talk) 00:25, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

One more source - publisher webpage refers to the books as the Peter Grant series. https://www.orionbooks.co.uk/Authors/Ben+Aaronovitch.page?AuthorName=Ben+Aaronovitch Benthatsme (talk) 01:05, 6 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I note that the Orion website (publisher) now lists the series as the 'Rivers of London' series, not 'Peter Grant'. Every physical and digital cover of each book I've been able to find also has 'a Rivers of London novel' at the top. I think it might be time to change this article's title. Does it make sense to include the October Man in the "Peter Grant (book series"). They are within the same universe, but in the October Man, Peter Grant has no speaking parts and is essentially a character that others only occasionally talk about... Suggest we remove it from the list or we start calling this entry something else than the Peter Grant series (esp. as it looks like there will be further books in which he will not be the main character.

As in the book Peter Grant is mentioned in the story and the story is similar as well as the world is similar, except it plays in Germany with different People, I would it leave in the table under Outside of main sequence. --GodeNehler (talk) 16:26, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User:Dfmclean —Preceding undated comment added 21:00, 13 May 2020 (UTC) Regarding the chronological order of King of the Rats, I received the following email from Ben's agency:[reply]

John Berlyne <berlyne@zenoagency.com> 4:47 PM (9 minutes ago) to me Thanks for this - Ben has asked me to pass this response on to you...

Hi Donald

All the short stories, including King of the Rats will be collected when we have enough of them to justify the price.

King of the Rats takes place between Foxglove Summer and The Hanging Tree – around the same sort of period as The Furthest Station.

Reasonable standards for attribution in fiction

[edit]

Why do we have to have citations for every last bleeping thing that we put on this page? It's all in the books. I'm doing nothing but putting up material that is actually in the darn books. Please stop reverting the changes unless there is an actual problem with them.

Dfmclean (talk) 17:55, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, in your last edit, you added: "In July 2020, a collection of short stories, 'Tales from the Folly', set in the Rivers of London universe was published. Many of these stories were previously available only in special editions of the novels, and thus not widely available". If such info is in the book itself, as you claim above, there should be no problem citing the book (forword, blurb, etc.) Please see WP:BURDEN, WP:RS, at least. WikiHannibal (talk) 10:35, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that it true, and I would have gotten to adding that eventually. However, the guidelines for people who find problems are very clear that just deleting something because you don't like it or because it isn't completely conformant is strongly discouraged. Rather, you should tag it as "needing citation" or add the citation yourself. Part of the purpose of this project is to get the content in on the site in the first place and violently deleting every last thing that doesn't have every single i dotted and t crossed is contrary to the spirit and letter of the guidelines. Not to mention that there are very few citations in the rest of this article - why is it now so critically important for everything to be cited? Dfmclean (talk) 21:50, 10 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

author's blog and order on chart DO NOT AGREE?

[edit]

The chart on this page purports to represent the author's own ordering of the books and stories; however—after noticing that some references here seemed out of place—I checked the blog entry and found quite a different placement of some of the works. On what basis then, does this page claim to have the "correct" internal chronological order of all these stories?

EDIT: Please someone who knows this series AND knows how to fix this Wiki page: it needs to be updated with the most recent books AND corrected. Someone? Anyone? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ed8r (talkcontribs) 14:18, 19 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Messy

[edit]

The article looks messy and is difficult to read. It also lacks a good list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.250.167.255 (talk) 23:22, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. It's too much work for me to do on my own so if anyone else would like to chip in, go ahead. KaraLG84 (talk) 16:10, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Added Tales from the Folly section

[edit]

I haven't read this short story collection yet so can't expand it any further. It needs a better citation. KaraLG84 (talk) 16:08, 8 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Re the simon Pegg TV adaptation

[edit]

Since this bit needs updating, I'm thinking of adding the following: 'According to Aaronovitch, the series is "still in the same state of permanent pre-pre-production"'. This would be followed by a citation of the interview where the quote was taken from. [1] Would this be enough? KaraLG84 (talk) 20:21, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Since I've had no replies it's going in. KaraLG84 (talk) 12:58, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline verification

[edit]

I added a note for False Value that the death of David Bowie occurs during the novel, not as a significant feature, but because it firmly identifies the time frame of the novel. I'm trying to validate the listed chronological order. However, someone reverted that edit. So, how are we supposed to do this? It isn't like there are academics writing papers about this series, so the contents of the stories are all we have to verify the contents of the wiki pages. Dmclean (talk) 15:58, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's still there, as a footnote: "This can be dated by a reference in the opening chapter of the novel, where Peter starts a new job on same day that David Bowie died, i.e., 10 January 2016".--AntientNestor (talk) 17:09, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And the article/chronology needs to get into shape by providing secondary refs wherever possible, and primary refs (quotes, and chapters or pages) for the rest. WikiHannibal (talk) 17:58, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gollancz/Orion now lists the series as the 'Rivers of London'

[edit]

In #Name of Series (above) User:Geoffrey Du Babbage points out the publisher's name for the series is "Rivers of London", and suggests that this article should follow suit. It's been discussed before and rejected, but surely the WP article should follow the recognized title. Time for a move.--AntientNestor (talk) 11:09, 13 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page Overhaul

[edit]

I have started to undertake a significant overhaul in this page to be better as an encyclopaedic entry. At the moment a lot of the page seems to be focused on the internal chronology of the series, which I'm not sure if particularly useful and probably can be summarised elsewhere on the page. It also doesn't contain a general overview of the series or the main characters, but does have a list of characters that may not be considered main ones. I will be adding these bits over the coming days and weeks. --Mollsmolyneux (talk) 12:47, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
