Interviews
[edit]Hello all, I just chopped a lot of the article because it seemed to me it was pursuing a political agenda. Specifically, the article was strewn with selective quotation of Davies' Radio Sheffield interview and citations of blogs, which gave the overall feel that WP was engaged in a campaign against the man.
I appreciate he said some pretty questionable things in that interview, but I'm not convinced Wiki ought to be raking over it, as it's almost impossible to do so without implicitly or explicitly rebutting his views.
With that being said, I think the article ought to contain a summary of his manifesto promises (rather than the specific points pulled out in the previous version,) which more or less speaks for itself. Chris Smowton (talk) 16:44, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- I have just removed the following section. It had no place in an article that is supposed to be {NPOV}. Yorkshire Phoenix 15:25, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
- During his first interview as Mayor with BBC Radio Sheffield on Monday June 8 2009, Davies' controversial policies were questioned in an interview by radio journalist Toby Foster. Foster questioned Davies' manifesto and pointed out that some of his policies were illegal, against Human Rights and also bad for the Doncaster economy.
- Davies had promised to "Scrap politically correct non-jobs and encourage the former employees to seek meaningful employment". However, when questioned by Foster, Davies admitted he did not know what ‘PC jobs’ there are in the council. Davies also promised to "stop translation services for immigrants". However, Foster pointed out that Davies cannot cut translation services for non-English speakers because it is illegal to do so under the European Court of Human Rights. On the subject of the Gay Pride march and the benefits of the event for the economy of Doncaster, Davies admitted: “Haven’t got a clue, I haven’t looked into… I haven’t got the details”. Davies also conceded that his cuts will mean job losses for local workers in Doncaster. [1]
- Later on Monday June 8 2009, Davies was interviewed on the BBC's Look North programme. Again, he was challenged on his policies and whether it was possible to deliver them. In response to the issue of Translation Services, Davies said: "Why are they in this country in the first place if they don’t know English?" When asked if cutting the number of councillors from 63 to 21 would lead to a reduction in representation, he replied: "Most people don’t know who their councillors are" [2]
- After the interviews, a number of groups were formed on Facebook, calling for protests against Davies and that he should resign. Within hours, several hundred people had joined them. [3]

bias
[edit]he was elected with 25,000 votes, 50% of the voter turnout. this article is way too biased against him. it's obvious that naive young left wing students are trying to make the mayor look bad when the adults who voted are massively in favour of him. kids, grow up! in the real world when you get a real job you will be right wing too, becaue right wing just means decent hard working people who do real jobs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jerem thorp03 (talk • contribs) 15:35, 8 October 2009 (UTC) — Jerem_thorp03 (talk • contribs) has made few or no other edits outside this topic.
- Precisely. There are to many Leftist users that troll around Wikipedia trying to down politicians that don't meet their naive PC views and spread mindless dross about these political groups.--English Bobby (talk) 20:21, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
- Whatever you say, guys. You must be right. Famousdog (talk) 12:30, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Well you seem to think you are.--English Bobby (talk) 14:45, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Not True He got 33% 0f the total votes cast after second preferences were counted. I think that two other candidates beat him on the firsr ballot See http://www.doncaster.gov.uk/Living_in_Doncaster/The_Mayor_and_Council/Elected_Mayor/The_Mayor.asp .....mikeL 18:03:10 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.238.234.205 (talk) 18:48, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed If you look at this article you will see that it was an extremely close run thing between Davies (English Democrats), Maye (Independent) and Holland (Labour). The number of votes cast was 74,966 (Davies got 23% of first choice votes = 16,961). The turnout was 35.8% (which means that the electorate is about 225,000). In other words, Davies was first choice for only 7.5% of the electorate. Even if you take his total votes (first and second choice) as a percentage of turnout it's 27%. Nowhere cocking near 50%. Seems like Jerem_thorp03 can't do basic maths. Sorry. Famousdog (talk) 10:39, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
Category:Mayors of places in the United Kingdom
[edit]I don't think Davies is unique enough to be in Category:Mayors of places in the United Kingdom as well as Category:Mayors of places in England when no-one else is. Unless I'm missing something... Cavrdg (talk) 19:01, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
- The latter category is in the former one, so that kind of makes sense: but shouldn't Davies be in a Category:Mayors of places in Yorkshire, and then that category in the English one? Yorkshire Phoenix 00:08, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- Then we can make a category called [[Category:Mayors of places in South Yorkshire]] and put that in [[Category:Mayors of places in Yorkshire]]... You see my problem with this plan?! How about we leave it at UK and delete the Yorkshire category since he's the only entry? Famousdog (talk) 11:15, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
