Adding some detail on Pete. Still chasing down his climbing record (dates etc) Also aiming to expand the Everest rescue details - my understanding is that he was instrumental in saving Beck Weathers and a Japanese climber.
Finally I'd note that the original entry mentioned that Peter was 'unique' in promoting Sherpa culture. I removed the 'unique' not because I believe that Pete's contribution is any 'less worthy', but because we should also honour the contribution of others, and to ignore any is to detract from all. Soo... I propose to add a short list along the lines of.. 'Other climbers who have lived in Nepal and/or made significant contributions to the Sherpa community have included Edmund and Peter Hillary, Chantal Mauduit, Dan Mazur .. .. .. etc' I think it is worthwhile doing this (despite the risk that some names will be missed) because it illustrates a character of mountaineering that might otherwise be lost in the 'list of summit achievements', and that is that mountaineers historically have been explorers, scientists, and champions of the wilderness and the cultures in which they travel - and that is a tradition worth recognising and promoting.Tban 05:05, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
record gone..
[edit]Pete Athans is no longer the record holder for white summitteers. There are two white guys having climbed Mt.E actually (before 2008 season) nine times, one of them Gheorghe Dijmarescu, a romanian born living in Hartford, Connecticut, who was every year on the north side. The other is David Hahn (climber), both expedition leaders, Hahn working for a big commercial company and having climbed Mt.E. mostly from the south side. --77.11.201.118 (talk) 21:28, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
