[edit]The Peso did not exist in Mexico until 1864, long after the US dollar was created. It was not a model for the US dollar. The dollar was modeled loosely after the Spanish 8 reales coin. The US dollar coin was not popular as international coinage since the Spanish 8 reales was both of finer silver .903 compared to the early 19th century US standard of .892 and weighed more, 27.07 grams compared to the US weight of 26.96 grams. The US later created the "Trade Dollar" for international transactions. It was equal to a Spanish 8 reales coin and only circulated outside the US.
I'm not up for doing a complete article on the Peso but the current one needs help!—Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.144.168.46 (talk • contribs) 3 August 2005 23:58

Pieces of eight
[edit]This page says that it is incorrect to call the Spanish dollar a peso. The Spanish dollar page agrees. However, the page on Spanish reales says that "piece of eight" is a (mis)translation of Peso de a Ocho. Which is correct? Daibhid C 16:36, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
The right name is "pieza" (piece) because "peso" (weight) is a generic name like length or volume. It was a mere wrong translation of the Catalan word "peça" (piece) to Spanish "peso". The coin "peça" was largely used and it gave the name of official Spanish coin "pesseta", which in fact had to be written "peceta", diminutive of "peça". That "little piece" was 7 "sous" (salaries) instead of 8 and was used in accounting for centuries in Catalonia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.48.160.236 (talk) 19:12, 13 December 2019 (UTC)
Request for more detail
[edit]While the fact that "Peso is now the name of the monetary unit of several former Spanish colonies." is informative, it lacks detail. Although typically outside of the scope of a typical encyclopedia, Wikipedia is unique as this information would be practical and useful.
It would be useful to include the following :
I have attempted basic research on the topic, but I lack respectible sources to form a ammendment with. 84.209.84.146 (talk) 11:43, 2 April 2009 (UTC) Darren R. Starr

I would like to ask Should Philippines be on the Peso page as all Philippine notes say “Piso”.
For instance, the 10 philippine peso banknote says “Sampung Piso”
