doesn't belong in main entry yet: my favorite category are disused periodizations: 19th century called 15th century painting in Flanders 'Primitives' (Les Primitifs) and called 14th century Italian painting "Italian Primitives" - see, the Italians WERE ahead of the rest of Europe at being Renaissance, even if it was a primitive one! --MichaelTinkler
Interesting. In philosophy, "early modern" seems to refers to, essentially, the 17th and 18th centuries--after the Renaissance. --LMS
In history, 1648 (the Peace of Westphalia) is the lower bounds of straight Modernity. After that, the Modern. Anything before that can be debated as 'Early Modern'. I've seen 14th century Italy called "The foundations of early modern" something or other. --MichaelTinkler.
