Was Voltaire wrong about William Penn's 1683 treaty with the Lenape Indians?

[edit]

There is a discussion here about William Penn's 1683 treaty with the Lenape Indians, and specifically whether Voltaire's famous quote ("...a treaty never written, never broken") from his 1764 Dictionnaire philosophique was incorrect. Could someone please take a look at it? Thanks! --Guy Macon (talk) 16:51, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the french quote: Il commença par faire une ligue avec les Américains ses voisins : c’est le seul traité entre ces peuples et les chrétiens qui n’ait point été juré et qui n’ait point été rompu. Voltaire, Lettres philosophiques, Partie 2 (Lettre IV Sur les Quakers) http://www.monsieurdevoltaire.com/pages/Lettres_philosophiques_Partie_2-3092090.html I'm not a translator but it was not "never written" but "never sworn". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.220.225.156 (talk) 12:45, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
