Pelican feeding her young
[edit]I suspect that the pelican atop the egg may have pierced her own breast and is feeding her young with her own blood. This is an old heraldic device usually called "a pelican in her piety." [1][2] As the article says, it is symbolic of taking great care for one's young. It is also a Christian symbol of charity. The resolution of the photo is too low to be certain, so I refrained from adding "with her own blood" to the relevant sentence.Quintus fabius (talk) 18:20, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
