Pekin bantam, or Cochin bantam

[edit]

Strange enough, but this edit was the only one done by an unknown user Chickenwoman. She made it without any discussion. There is still a firm ground to believe that the previous editors of the article were not wrong stating that Pekin bantam=Cochin bantam. This is what the literature on chicken breeds says (e.g., [1], [2], [3], ) and what can be found in the article Cochin (chicken) and on the Internet (e.g., [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9]). I used to know a prominent Australian Pekin breeder Bill Plant (btw, quoted in this book), and this is what he wrote to a friend of ours Dr. Elio Corti: "For many years I had been researching information on first of all the Pekin (Cochin) Bantam [10]." So, I would like to return the double name of this breed. --Michael Romanov (talk) 01:30, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is separate Cochin article for a reason. While they are often confused, it is accepted in both North America and Europe (or at least the U.K., since we're dealing with English language sources here) that Pekins have always been a separate breed than Cochins. Your book sources the ones from Google) are all very old, and not up to date with current breed knowledge. In many countries, Pekins are called "Cochin bantams", and are thus thought to just be the bantam version of the Cochin large fowl. But they a separate true bantam, in fact. As you can see, this situation is much like the common confusion of Araucanas and Ameraucanas. In Britain, Araucanas may have some of the features of Ameraucanas. They are very similar in some respects, and are often confused. But they are still separate breeds, according to source materials. VanTucky 02:01, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
