The article as currently written implies that the name applies only to the northern part of the range which extends from Maiden Castle in the south to the outlier of Beeston Castle Hill in the north. I have always taken it to include the entire 'massif' including outliers such as Bolesworth Hill, Hart Hill and King James's Hill etc. Individual useage may differ - what is the consensus? That was my understanding, based on local usage and the OS 1:25,000 labelling. However, I don't have a reference that discusses the ridge in detail. What do your sources state? Espresso Addict (talk) 07:11, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
As far as OS labelling goes, OS have a modern habit of restricting the names of areas of country of great extent to a much smaller part of the map face than would seem appropriate. It was not always so. An example is that of Cumbrian Mountains on OS Explorer OL4 The English Lakes: north-western area where that title extends across less than 8cm of the map face ie less than 2 grid squares and could be mistaken by someone quite unfamiliar with the area as a reference only to the local piece of high ground between Thirlmere, Watendlath and Borrowdale. I've not yet been able to lay my hands on any references beyond OS which delineate the extent of the Peckforton Hills. My own personal observations when I used to be a resident and frequent visitor to the area was that the term was used variably, certainly on occasion in the wider sense, but that doesn't count for the purposes of encyclopaedic content!
