Peace of mind
[edit]Peace-of-Mind is being JOYFUL (when knowing why is not necessary); or being °SORROWFUL (say, losing an arm) but understanding why, or by a leap-of-faith acceptance saying "the understanding lies in a higher intellect—i.e. that understands the chain of natural causes and their natural effects as a process of Being called G-D and the knowledge that things could not be different than they are. Whatever is, is; (and by hypothesis) the cause is knowable. It is the will of G-D; that is Life; or that is Nature"— all mean the same and bring, somewhat, a bit of Peace-of-Mind.
Loss of an Arm
[edit]The physical pain of losing an arm certainly persists; the mental pain can be mitigated if the mind is occupied with the understanding of why or by acceptance. Which is easier to accept with greater equanimity—losing an arm by a stupid accident or losing an arm under advice of a team of eminent physicians, who advise that the arm must go or you will die of gangrene? When you understand why, you can contemplate, at that instant, the joy of saving your life.
Of course, you will then ask "what caused the gangrene to happen in the first place?" Inevitably your limit knowledge is reached—at that point there remains only a leap-of-faith that the understanding resides in a greater intellect. That can give you Peace-of-Mind, if the faith in your hypothesis is strong enough; the pain and sorrow, however, still persist. Any faith has great 'cash value'; see Mark Twain's "Little Story".
