Image Request

[edit]

It would be really nice if someone could find or create a fair use qualified image of the instruments used in this form of tattooing, as the are different in appearance to those used in many other types of primitive tattooing. I think such images would really add to this article. 69.132.53.165 (talk) 22:34, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tufuga ta tatau interpretation in the English language

[edit]

Just noting here that the closest word in the English language which explains the word 'Tufuga ta tatau' is 'master tattooist.' This is not a 'peacock' hyperbole, rather, the word 'master tattooist' gives a clearer idea of the authority and expert knowledge and skill of Tufuga ta tatau in Samoa. Tufuga ta tatau are no ordinary tattooist, their skill and knowledge incorporates their mastering of this art (technique + cultural concepts) and the esteem they are held in the cultural tradition and custom of Samoa. There are many tattooists but very few in the tufuga rank. In translating these Samoan concepts into the English language in wikipedia, the translations incorporate tacit cultural meaning to provide a truer and correct explanation, rather than pure transliteration. This means it might not quite fit into wikipedia's style manual - tho' why that would be set in concrete when the word wikipedia itself, and the concept behind this online encyclopaedia, is an innovation itself. i.e. The founders of wikipedia have created a hybrid word, wiki is hawaiian - because no word in the English language existed for this idea. Hail to new ideas and the sharing of all human knowledge unfettered by the weaknesses in the 'real world.' Teine Savaii (talk) 12:42, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cukui

[edit]

Also noting that the term, "Cukui" in Mexican- American culture is the boogyman, In Polynesian culture, It;s the candle nut which is usually burned and lit to light pathways. When it's done burning you usually mortar and pestle it and you add a little bit of oil and water and use it for the tattoo base or Pe'a.Cukuimayne1 (talk) 04:15, 22 March 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cukuimayne1 (talkcontribs) 04:05, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
