Infobox and lede
[edit]- "It was designed by the architect Stanford White of the firm McKim, Mead & White in the High Italian Renaissance style." → "It was designed in the High Italian Renaissance style by the architect Stanford White of the firm McKim, Mead & White." As it stands, it sounds like White is in the style, not the building
- "The French government bought the building in 1952." → "The French government purchased the building five years later." to break up the flow of the paragraph
Site
[edit]There is a yard on the south side of the house, separating it from the James B. Duke House directly to the south.
Redundancy between this and the previous sentence can be cleared up- Do we know what happened to the rear entrance, or at least when it was removed?
- There is a vacant lot in the rear of the building, but it's not owned by France, unlike the yard on the south side of the house, which is. Sadly, I couldn't find more recent sources that specifically mention what happened to the yard. Epicgenius (talk) 23:09, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
Design
[edit]- Pipe "High Italian Renaissance" to Renaissance Revival architecture in the body as well as the lede
- Complete aside – Stanford White is a minor character in the musical Ragtime
- I'm not surprised. Actually, the story of his death is quite interesting, he was killed in a building he'd designed by a deranged millionaire who he thought of as a clown. It's a shame White's own article is bad, though. Epicgenius (talk) 23:09, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
Facade
[edit]- Switch the information in the first two sentences for better flow
The side garden had been designed along with the rest of the house.
I assume you mean it was designed at the same time, by the same people, etc. but that is not clear in the current phrasing
Interior
[edit]- "in the TV shows" → "in episodes of the TV shows"
- "In 2009, the
genuinestatue was placed" - "on the house's south wall" → "on the south wall of the house"
- I'm not quite sure what a "Louis XV clock" is
- Me neither. I've removed it. Epicgenius (talk) 23:09, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- "Immediately in front of it is another reception room"
a salon with velvet hangings and pictures on the walls.
sentence fragment
History
[edit]Construction
[edit]- "had not been installed yet" → "had not yet been installed"
- WL dumbwaiter
- "The house took so long to construct that two of the Whitneys' children, John (Jock) and Joan, were born while the house was under construction." → "During this long period of construction, Helen gave birth to the Whitneys' first two children, John (Jock) and Joan."
- Done, though Jock and Joan were the Whitneys' only two children, so I have clarified that. Epicgenius (talk) 23:09, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
Residential use
[edit]- When listing "events, such as", alternate using "such as" with "including" and other similar words
French Cultural Services
[edit]- "which in turn" → "who in turn"
- "cultural services division" is not capitalized in the second sentence but is everywhere else
- "outside a country's capital city"
- "The French Cultural Services office was among the United States' busiest cultural-exchange buildings by 1964." → "By 1964, the French Cultural Services office was among the United States' busiest cultural-exchange buildings."
- "19th- and early 20th-century" uses numerals, whereas prior sections wrote out the numbers of centuries
- I have changed them all to numerals for consistency. Epicgenius (talk) 23:09, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
- "facade was renovated in 1980" → "were renovated in 1980"
