"Once again, however, his shock was neither social nor political, but moral." I can't for the life of me understand what this refers to. The finding of pottery or the political awakening seem the only candidates, however these don't seem "shocks", one was political.. etc. i don't know him at all well, so feel unqualified to edit this, however it makes no sense to me as is.
