The oboe is principally an orchestral instrument. Often, players who spend many years studying an orchestral instrument, and then leave this highly competitive field to play a style on the fringes (not just Jazz, but also, say, historcal instruments is an indication the the player could not cut it in the 'real world.
Not so with Paul. He is a real oboist and a first rate one. He was a finalist as English Horn soloist at the New York Met Orchestra. Oboe is a difficult instrument and it is a rue testimate o his skill he is able to play improvised music on the instrument with such a high quality.
