Paul Allen Info
PAUL ALLEN Paul Allen founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975.Allen left the company in 1983. He left because he found out he had Hodgkin’s disease. Hodgkin’s disease is a form of cancer in the Lymphatic system. The Lymphatic system defends the body from foreign invasion by disease causing agents such as viruses, bacteria, or fungi. .He is still the head of the board of directors. His company stock made him one of the world’s richest man. On his own he has made a name for himself as a founder of and shrewd investor in Hi-tech firms like Starwave, America online and ticket master as the enthusiastic owner of the NBA’s Portland trailblazers and the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. The way Allen started out was he went to a school named Lakeside prep school. This is where Gates and Allen became very good friends. A little while latter Gates, Allen, and a few other students discover computing and programming. They loved working with the computer so much that their grades stared to drop. So Computer Center Corporation let the school get a discount on computers for the school. After that they started up a company called Traf-O-Data. Together they built a computer that measure traffic flow. They made about $20,000. Later on Allen in rolled in Washington State University so their company shut down. After a little while Allen and Gates became partners again and called up MITS and told them that they developed a BASIC that can be used on the Altair but they didn’t really build a BASIC. MITS believed them and accepted them into the company. Allen and Gates started to work on the BASIC as they promised. When they finished building the BASIC they tested the BASIC and the BASIC worked. Allen and Gates delivered there promise. Gates then dropped out of Harvard and with Allen they founded Microsoft. Allen started making windows but he had to leave Microsoft because he had Hodgkin’s disease. He was awarded the Lifetime achievement award by PC. magazine and was inducted in the computer hall of fame. September 28, 2000 Paul Allen is assuming a new role as senior strategy adviser at Microsoft corp. In June Spaceship one, sponsored by one of Allen’s foundations, became the first successful commercial spacecraft when it passed the 100 kilometer threshold of space. Also in september 2003 Valcan ventures began funding project Halo, an attempt to apply Artificial Intelligence techniques problem of producing a digital Aristole that might serve as a mantor, providing comprehensive acces to the world's knowledge. Paul Allen is a major contributor to the SETI, or Search For Extra- Terrestrial Intelligence project. Allen also founded the Experience Music Project., and oridinally inspired by his interest in a museum to house his consierable collection of jimi Hendrix memorabilia. In june of 2004, Pual Allen opened the science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, located at the experience Music Project. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.56.192.14 (talk • contribs)
contradiction
- Paul Allen has been single for his entire life. In 2005 New York Daily News reported that Paul Allen had been dating actress and former beauty queen Laura Harring co-star of Mulholland Drive (movie) for about 6 months.
Isn't that a contradiction? --80.63.213.182 16:48, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- I think that just means he has been un-married for his entire life. It certainly needs clarification. --Wulf 06:37, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Net Worth
Why is Paul Allen's net worth shown with a red down arrow rather than a green up-arrow (i.e., positive net worth)? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Andreas Toth (talk • contribs) 00:11, 3 January 2007 (UTC).
- That just means that, as of the last update, his net worth is down. Take a look at other articles with net worths, such as those of major companies. --Wulf 06:32, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- Why is there a discrepancy between the amount quoted in the lead section, and the amount quoted in the infobox? − Twas Now ( talk • contribs • e-mail ) 10:18, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
Education??
There should be a section on his education.
Ethnicity???
What is his ethnicity? We should add that in the biography to make it more informative. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.225.239.137 (talk) 01:27, 14 February 2007 (UTC).
Conflict of Interest?
I've noticed a couple of edits by user:Nank2003. Nothing wrong with their edits, but the name of a press officer for Allen's Vulcan Investment vehicle is Michael Nank. I'm not sure if it is the same person (they haven't responded to a message on their talk page) but if it is, it's surely a WP:conflict of interest, is it not? Dan K 08:01, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Unsourced claims
This article claims in several places that Paul Allen has "distanced himself" from Microsoft. What does this mean? Why is there no source for this?
After his dicease, we are told that "Allen did not return to Microsoft and began distancing himself from the company." This statement is obviously not true, as he was on the board of directors for 17 (!) more years. How distant can you be when you are on the board of directors for 17 years?
Paul Allen is still one of Microsoft's largest shareholders. How distant is this?
My feeling is that someone is trying to imply something with this article, but using vague words to get out of using proper sources. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.114.184.86 (talk) 04:44, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Paul Allen does not own the Seattle Sonics.
If you check the wiki entry for the Seattle Sonics, you will see it has other owners. I don't believe the NBA would allow him to own two NBA franchises. He does own the Portland Trail Blazers.
Davidschwabe (talk) 05:06, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Interval Research Corporation
I get the impression that the article should mention the seemingly defunct Interval Research Corporation founded by him. 74.78.98.109 (talk) 08:34, 14 February 2008 (UTC)
GA on hold
:::: well no problem with the factual aspect but there is inconsistency in the units used in real estate subsection. you can use square feet → m² instead of acres → km². also instead of having subsections in the investment section you have bold emphasis by inserting ; (i have addressed these issues myself)
for example instead of ===Real estate=== you can have ;Real estate. thanks, Sushant gupta (talk) 04:20, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- pls. add ref to the statement→ Allen also owns three professional sports teams: the SeattleSeahawks of the National Football League, the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association, and the future Seattle soccer franchise in Major League Soccer that will begin playing in the 2009 season. (in the introduction). thanks, Sushant gupta (talk) 04:40, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- All done! Gary King (talk) 06:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
GA pass
the article meets the GA requirements. it is very informative and well cited article. keep it up. Sushant gupta (talk) 08:31, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the promotion - but I disagree with the bold section titles. As I posted on your talk page, "I don't see the style being used at either article that you provided." and "Please link me to a recently promoted Featured Article that uses this style. I am not trying to be contentious, but this is something that I have never seen - and as you can see from my user page, I have been involved in a number of article promotions." Gary King (talk) 08:38, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
sorry those subsections article had there main pages. extremely sorry for providing you those links. they were once subdivided by sects. okay have a look at Economic development in India. its a GA. Sushant gupta (talk) 08:40, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Could you show me an example that went through the Featured Article process, though, since this would have been brought up during that if it was an issue? Preferably one that is not written by you since I think these ones are, then it'd defeat the purpose of looking for an example. One of the primary reasons that I am against this type of heading is because the heading appears very similar to the surrounding text, with the only major difference is the bolded text which helps it stand out - a little. Gary King (talk) 08:43, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
okay then do me a favor! expand the subsection on SpaceShipOne and i will definitely withdraw my statement. Sushant gupta (talk) 09:27, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- I agree that the section is too short, but unfortunately, his involvement with the matter does not move beyond the investment that he made. I've moved the section up; let me know if that is an improvement. Gary King (talk) 09:31, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- fine, thanks for your efforts. Sushant gupta (talk) 09:34, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- On using a semicolon for sections, I'm pretty sure that's discouraged. The semicolon may be used in rare cases, for instance, for a heading on a bullet list that is not properly a subsection. But when the semicolon is used, a section does not appear in the table of contents, cannot be linked to directly, etc. If you don't like the way subheads appear (not bold enough), you could always consider using another skin. Hope this helps -- nice article, congrats on the GA! -Pete (talk) 17:05, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks! And yep, I agree with the accessability issues—the primary reasons as to why I disagreed with the semicolon usage. Gary King (talk) 19:23, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Wired World
I think this article should include some more about Paul's "Wired World" post-Microsoft strategy. Interval Research Corporation (research), Asymetrix (technology), Starwave (content), and Vulcan Ventures (venture financing) had interesting synergies that (IMHO) were under-exploited. Tlesher (talk) 19:11, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
Which Dave Stewart?
From the article:
“ | His band also played at another party he hosted during the Cannes film festival with Dave Stewart. | ” |
But which Dave Stewart is meant in this article? Even assuming that the Dave Stewart mentioned has "something to do with music", following the Dave Stewart link leads to a disambiguation page that still contains 4 people by that name that qualify... 68.200.98.166 (talk) 23:03, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- I'd put my money on David A. Stewart, but a supporting reference would be nice ... Pdfpdf (talk) 01:04, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. Dave "Eurithmics" Stewart is the one I'd put my money on too. But I could not find anything identifying the "correct" Dave Stewart. 68.200.98.166 (talk) 00:43, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- I'd rule out two of the four, but the remaining Dave has worked with Barbara Gaskin... "It's my party and I cry if I want to...", which was a pretty big hit in some places. And, to be honest, until today, I thought that both those Daves were the same person. I remember that song from way back. Performed by Barbara Gaskin and Dave Stewart. Until today, I thought that was "Eurithmics" Dave. I guess not... . It's between those two I am sure, but which one? 68.200.98.166 (talk) 00:54, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- I had a similar problem with Morrison and Van Morrison because they played Gloria together but luckily Van Morrison is never called 'James'. 92.107.27.64 (talk) 14:34, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

With trivial effort I found several existing articles about projects that Allen has been involved in that weren't mentioned or even linked to as a see-also topic:
I just =Paul_Allen&diff=prev&oldid=381635088 fixed the omission of Interval Research and only stumbled on the rest when I went to update this comments section. Go2Net, a company that Allen spent several hundred million dollars on as of 1999[1], doesn't merit a mention in Allen's bio (though his involvement was mention in the poorly-spun off article on InfoSpace (Dot Com crash). Since Wikipedia:Good article criteria defines "Broad in its coverage" as one of the key criteria to good article status, it seems warranted for someone interested in maintaining this as a good article do a little research about other notable projects that Allen has been involved it. To me, if an Allen project is notable enough to have an article it needs to be mentioned (or at least linked to) here. Thanks. 67.100.125.235 (talk) 06:35, 29 August 2010 (UTC) P.S. Misuse of article to try to lend legitimacy to 419 scam
On 21 October 2015, a 419 scammer sent out a spam email that referenced this article and the scam claimed that the money that the 419 scammer said they would give you came from Paul Allen, which is never the case with the 419 scams anyway. Have reported this fact to the Foundatin and in my report of the scam to them indicated that I would leave this note in the talk page so that others may be warned off about the scam should they also receive it and come to this article's main page and want to look things up further regarding the matter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:A601:506:1201:155D:B845:1F4E:FAF6 (talk) 23:28, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

GAR request
Responding to the {{GAR request}}. A quick look at the article shows that the prose is not up to standard. A lot of WP:Proseline, one sentence paragraphs, etc. A little worried it might be overly promotional. Half the article is under philanthropy. Nothing negative is presented, which may be justified. There is this, this, this, and this. None of it is bad, but it just makes me wonder. Also things like Luckily for Allen, he refused
and the slightly excessive use of lists are not really encyclopedic. Overall I don't think it is terribly far away. A good copyedit, trim or split of the Philanthrophy section and a few other fixes and it might be alright. Maybe a bit of COI editing (which would explain some of this) given this. @Jordanatvulcan, Jordansocial, and Gary:. AIRcorn (talk) 21:09, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

Weasely reporting
This is in reaction to this edit by an IP with an edit summary saying: (→Aerospace: WP:weasel wording. That something has been reported is almost always off topic & unnotable. Everything included has been "reported" because that's what's required to be includable. If we said "it was reported" for every purport, most of the page would be filled with "it was reported"s. If a source is reliable and it words something as a true fact, then we paraphrase that and also word it as a true fact, without resorting to WP:weaselly "a (particular) source said X".) I'm commenting here rather than on an IP talk page. The edit reverts an earlier edit I made.
The source cited ([4]) is Reuters; generally a reliable source. The relevant assertion by that cited source reads: "Stratolaunch Systems Corporation, the space company founded by late billionaire and Microsoft Corp co-founder Paul Allen, is closing operations, cutting short ambitious plans to challenge traditional aerospace companies in a new 'space race,' four people familiar with the matter said on Friday." I took that as a report as a fact that four unnamed people made a statement that Stratolaunch is closing operations. I have no reason to doubt those four unnamed people, but I didn't think the Reuters report of their assertion provided sufficient reason for Wikipedia to assert that what they asserted was factual.
I have not unreverted that edit. Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 06:12, 19 June 2019 (UTC)
Net Worth
Makes sense to remove the 'net worth' from the Infobox? I came here from this category listing page [[5]]. AltruisticHomoSapien (talk) 16:59, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

Deep Ocean Exploration and Sunken Vessel Discovery
Mr. Allen’s vessel Petrel made many amazing deep sea discoveries, including WWII warships. Needs to be added to his many efforts. 170.249.182.10 (talk) 18:22, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
