Happy Hippo commercial?

I remember reading years ago (although I can't seem to find the link right now) that the "Lion sleeps tonight" short was created by Coffin as nothing more than a demonstration of his capabilities as an animator, and not as a commercial for Ferrero's snack. Also, I can't find any credible reference on the Net that would support the claim of it being a commercial.
