External links is getting spammy
[edit]The list of external links is starting to exceed a reasonable ratio of content to links. A random sampling of click-throughs indicates a mix of government/Chamber of Commerce links, premium membership-supported advertising sites, special event sites, businesses, etc. Many of these probably fail WP:LINKSPAM. Someone more familiar with Paso Robles should take a look through the links and help pare the list down to a more manageable and useful size. Links to the city's official site, the Chamber of Commerce, and maybe a few other particularly useful sites should be all that's needed. Sorry link spammers and advertisers, but your links don't add value to the encyclopedia, just money to your own pockets. —Willscrlt ( “Talk” ) 12:24, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Correct Pronunciation
[edit]Every time Paso Robles is featured on a television either in the news or a recreational program the town is pronounced "Paso Ro-bulls". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.60.150.78 (talk) 19:24, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
- I couldn't agree more, but it is how local and out of state non-Spanish speaking people say it. The city of San Peed-row share this grief!47.157.18.219 (talk) 21:32, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

Paso Robles Inn
[edit]OK, so, is the stuff in this article about the Paso Robles Inn cadged from their website, or did their website just lift it from Wikipedia? As it stands, a big hunk of this article is advertising for a business; it doesn't really seem right. And why so many mentions of Paderewski??? --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 00:29, 2 July 2016 (UTC)

Pronunciation problems
[edit]The pronunciation should definitely be just /ˈpæ.sə ˈɹoʊ.bəlz/ but also the IPA doesn't match the phonetic spelling given either. 2WR1 (talk) 13:04, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
Correct translation of full city name
[edit]"El Paso de Robles" is translated in this article and elsewhere as "The pass of the oaks," but a literal translation would be just "The pass of oaks." This is certainly a very trivial point, and even the city's official website uses the second "the" when translating the name, so I'm inclined to just leave it alone, but how do others feel?
One point that just occurred to me is that "the pass of the oaks" is more idiomatic in English and would thus be a better, if not more literal, translation.
Dave Andrew (talk) 20:01, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
- Every source I've found, including official City of Paso Robles sites, uses the English idiomatic translation with the "the". That's what we go with. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆 𝄐𝄇 20:05, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
The best English translation of "el paso de robles" would be "oak pass". Both "the pass of the oaks" and "the pass of oaks" are inferior translations as they fail to account for a syntactical difference between English and Spanish (1). To provide the greatest clarity to its English-speaking readership, the best translation should be used in this site rather than inferior translations reproduced elsewhere.
1. A noun adjunct is common English usage to modify "pass". In geographic usage, a pass or paso is a "a low place in a mountain range". Among the 398 California place names in the United States Geological Survey database that include "pass", all 398 use the syntax "X pass" and 0 use the syntax "pass of the X".

- Wikipedia is based on reliable sources and the conversation above explains how these are in agreement with the current content. You have not presented other reliable sources but instead have performed an analysis of published material that reaches a conclusion not stated by the sources. As interesting as this might be, it is not an acceptable way to edit content of Wikipedia. Interested readers can perform their own research with the sites you've used or innumerable other sites on the internet but Wikipedia is not the place for that. I would also not recommend to anyone that they attempt to get "the greatest clarity" of Spanish by using California place names. That would be a bit like using Shakespeare to learn English.
