Culture

[edit]

I am tempted to just remove the section. First off it reeks of POV, as if it was written by some disaffected former/current resident. Secondly, it make a lot of claims about crime, income level, drug usage, etc, and provides no sources to back them up, let alone any stats that have any kind of verifiability. I figure I give it a week and see if someone can salvage it or source it, otherwise I am just going to remove it on natural and POV reasons. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:05, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I would advise against deletion. I live NEAR that area, and some of my grandchildren are actually residents. The whole section really has gone downhill in recent years, and I know from my granddaughter that brawls at the high school are a regular occurrence. She and her friends have a social network that they call "My Space," and virtually all of the pages I have seen talk about nothing but sex and drugs.

We've had several friends who have been robbed in the area, and I won't even drive through anymore. I don't like the idea that whoever wrote this was "disaffected" or resented the town; the only thing they would be "disaffected" about would be completely unresponsive state and local governments that simply refuse to even acknowledge the problems that are choking this area TO DEATH. It is a tragedy what is happening to those children out there. This must be included in that article because people HAVE GOT TO KNOW. It's not right that we all want to pretend it isn't happening. If it were Carroll County, someone would do something. If it were Frederick County, someone would do something. If it were Bethesda, someone would do something. But it's Glen Burnie, it's Pasadena, it's Anne Arundle County, so no one cares. I am tired of it. If the specific percentages can't be verified (and believe me I will look), the bulk of the section should be left. It is absurd that we will close our eyes to the creeping monster encircling our communities. Joan53

Yeah, I have relatives that live in that area as well. And regardless if there are no sources to back up the information provided, it's nothing more than original research and even then it's extremely POV. These issues are issues that could practically be said about any area any anywhere, regardless. Also the idea that people have to know is more of a reason to remove, Wikipedia is not a soapbox. If the section is not reworked and given appropriate and verifiable sources then I will remove it. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 06:57, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's not making a soapbox of anything, it's simply stating a truth: that drugs and violence have become such a part of that area's culture that they define it. I do not wish to impugne your word, but I find it extremely difficult to believe that anyone with relatives in Pasadena could deny the pervasiveness of poverty and drug usage in the city. In fact, I would find it near impossible. One would not write an article about Paris without noting its status as the fashion capital of the world. One would not write an article about St. Petersburg without noting its status as Russia's Imperial window to the West; similarly, one would not write an article about Pasadena and exclude the crime that is now the area's sad halmark. I'm sorry, but I just completely disagree with what you've said. And if you do have relations in Padadena, then you ought to be ashamed for denying what they're going through. Joan53
Drugs and violence are a part of any area's culture today. If you are going to specifically pick out one place, then you are going to have to provide some substationl evidence of the supposed facts that you are putting forward. Otherwise this is nothing more then hearsay. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 07:05, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Okay, time out here. While drugs and violence may be a part of "any area's culture" (a statement that I would dispute anyway), that does not mean that they necessary define the area, as Joan53 is claiming about this particular town. Something that completely dominates a town's entire culture is perfectly relevant. I am sometimes amazed at the delete-happy editors here. One thing must go: any undocumented statistics, such as the alleged increase in drug usage by 300%. Other than that, however, I would say that the rest absolutely must stay. History21

Well i have reomved the section since that since i have addressed the issue the section remained unsourced in it claims, was still exremely POV, and smaked of WP:NOT. The only thing i can say is that if you want the section back in then provide sources that can verify the claims, make the section NPOV, and make it so that it is "Propaganda or advocacy of any kind" otherwise you can expect the section to be removed again. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:28, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I grew up in Pasadena. Parts are not so great, some areas have mansions and huge estates. It can't be described in the simplistic terms joan uses. I will say, however, that she does seem to be overstated the "decay" of Pasadena. Like any middle class suburb, bored teenagers are smoking pot and dropping acid. The crime is not really terrible. Green Haven, ONE part of Pasadena has certainly gone downhill in the last 15 years, but Lake Shore, Chelsea Beach and areas east are still Cupcake Land; well maintained yards and riding mowers on weekends. This ain't the apocalypse, joan. 71.200.83.199 02:00, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Police Officer's View of Pasadena

[edit]

There are no recorded stats about Pasadena itself. But as a former Police officer working in the Eastern District located on Mountain Rd. in Pasadena, MD. I can tell you for a fact this is not a pleasant place to live.

Violent crime, robbery and home invasions were common every day. I had many cases of car loads of roaming thugs driving around just looking to start a fight with one individual. For some reason, they got their "kicks" to have 10-13 people to gang up on an individual.

Drugs run rampant in the local youth. Everything from Marijuana to heroin is commonly found on their person when an arrest is made.

Sure, there are some positive aspects of living in Pasadena. Water sports, fine restaurants and being in close proximity to Annapolis and Baltimore.

I chose to leave Maryland all together recently and it was the best decision of my life.

--Im sorry. That was the first time I ever made a comment on Wiki. Former AAPD officer, J. Feani.

  • Once again, Pasadena is a large area. What's true for Rivera Beach is not true for Green Haven which is not true for Lake Shore which is not true for Mt. Carmel or Fox Hollow Run. Drugs ran rampant with all youth, especially with the middle and upper middle class kids in Pasadena who can afford it. Which is a lot of kids in Pasadena, because it's eastern sections are largely upper middle class. But "lol" at thinking a couple kids with pot and smack constitute proof an area is not "pleasant". 71.200.83.199 02:54, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am a lifetime resident of Pasadena and I have to say that as much as all of you are complaining about the area it truly is a nice place to live. I live over my the golf course and I would say my childhood was great and I've always felt like Pasadena was a great place, if anything it is sheltered. When I moved to Prince George's county for college I was in shock of how sheltered Pasadena left me, and that is in my opinion a great thing. Yes there will be drugs and crime just like everywhere else, but if you have never lived in the area you have no right to talk negatively of it as you really don't know what your talking about. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.252.236.226 (talk) 19:49, 9 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To add to article

[edit]

Basic information (which anyone visiting this article would expect to find here) to add to this article: the origin/etymology of this city's name. 98.123.38.211 (talk) 23:50, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
