Printing House Square

[edit]

The article on Hanover Square, Manhattan, also claims that square was once Printing House Square, though it makes no mention of printing enterprises, which seems odd. I guess it is part of Park Row? If so the two articles intercorrelate somehow. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 13:56, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Was The New York Times Really First ?

[edit]

The claim based on Dunlap's 2001 New York Times story that the Times was the first NYC paper to have it's own building needs some additional support. The New Yorker Staats Zeitung historical pamphlet states:

In the year Eighteen Hundred and Fifty-Seven the NEW-YORKER STAATS-ZEITUNG developed to such an extent that Mrs. Uhl decided to erect a structure suitable to its demands. The property at No. 17 Chatham Street was purchased, and on April First the first issue of the "greater" STAATS appeared from its new edifice.

A picture legend in that same pamphlet indicates that the paper's prior William Street location was closed no later than 12 March 1858. If, in fact, Anna Uhl did erect and occupy a new building at 17 Chatham Street in 1857, then Dunlap's claim for the Times would not hold. At the very latest, the Staats-Zeitung appears to have been publishing from a building that was designed and built for its own use by early 1858. If the Times was really first, it was a very close race between the rival papers. That would add interesting color to the history of Chatham Street if it can be documented.TMRhistory (talk) 14:38, 13 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
