Paritta Suttas are not praying for Buddha to intervene
[edit]Here is the version of the article with my edit (that was reverted by Spasemunki) http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Paritta&oldid=155387838
My point was that even the Buddha Himself needed to have the paritta recited to him when he was gravely ill. The purpose of the paritta suttas is to focus the mind on the Dhamma.
As for the sun-god and moon-god, space exploration has investigated these phenomena. Even if the sun and moon are deities, they were appealing for the Buddha’s help during His lifetime and not after his parinibbana. Antony272b2 05:29, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
- I have no problem with you adding the section concerning using paritta to focus the mind regarding illness, etc. But the text of the suttas regarding Canda and Suriya are what they are; there are a number of paritta scriptures that continue to be included in popular paritta collections that include this sort of invocation. It's a type of text that continues to be included among paritta, so it should be recorded. The wording regarding paritta in general should probably be changed though- I'll take a look at it. --Clay Collier 05:50, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
- OK I’ve added the asseveration of truth material (one paragraph), retaining the Canda and Suriya parittas which are, as you say, scriptural. I started writing an argument based on space exploration that the Sun and Moon aren’t going to be taken away by Rahu, but who knows: there is a need to practice as if the world could end at any moment! Redirects needed for alternate spellings
[edit]I found this article, with difficulty, while searching for "pirith", which is how it appeared in this tweet from Sri Lanka Cricket. I suggest that someone who knows how should make that and other commonly used spellings redirect to this page. 209.179.100.1 (talk) 01:37, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
