Consensus to not merge due to nominator withdrawing the proposal. (non-admin closure) JML1148 (talk | contribs) 08:07, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I propose merging Paraparaumu Beach into this article. The two are almost always known collectively as "Paraparaumu".[1] The Paraparaumu Beach article also mainly only has demographics, which makes the merge quite easy. To me it appears that Paraparaumu Beach is more of some sort of named or statistical area than a seperate town, but I know absolutely nothing about this stuff.

Pinging Gadfium who appears to be quite knowledgeable in this field.

I don't have any objection to the merger. Paraparaumu already includes the demographics for the areas of Paraparaumu Beach, Raumati South, Raumati Beach and Otaihanga, so as it stands, we are treating Paraparaumu as a medium urban area (that's what Statistics New Zealand calls it) with the others as components. I didn't create any of these articles - @Grutness: created a couple of them, and might like to give input, and getting some feedback from more local editors would be welcome.-gadfium 03:39, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not entirely convinced, but willing to be swayed if others think they belong in the same article. I don't see itthemas any less valid than the various suburb articles for places in NZ cities. But it's not an area of the country I know too much about - if it seems that they overlap too much for their own articles, then fair enough. Grutness...wha? 05:10, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a bit interesting because there is no Waikanae Beach article as it's just covered in Waikanae. Now obviously that's an argument to avoid, but maybe we can start discussion on criteria to decide whether these types of articles should exist or not for consistency, and to avoid content forks. —Panamitsu (talk) 01:55, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Grutness - to me, it feels like a suburb of Paraparaumu (and is listed separately on road signs in the area). WP:NPLACE would suggest that it keeping its own article is totally fine in this context, with the Paraparaumu article still covering the area as a whole. I'm not convinced about a merger either. Paraparaumu and Paraparaumu Beach were originally two distinct and separate settlements, and while sprawl has seen the built-up areas come together they still maintain their own separate identities. WP:NPLACE applies, and suburbs etc that abut each other have their own articles. Moreover, I'd suggest that there should be separate articles for Waikanae and Waikanae Beach, as the two are separate and distinct, but that's another story. LINZ treats the two as separate entities, which suggests that separate articles are appropriate. Schwede66 17:25, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I've now withdrawn my nomination. Another editor could probably close the discussion by now. —Panamitsu (talk) 22:53, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
