Engineering with paper versus the engineering of paper manufacture
[edit]this is apparently the only meaning of paper engineering, it is related also to the creation of paper toys and pop up books. --Melaen (talk) 00:44, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Agree. "paper engineering" as applied to toys and books is missing. David Spector (user/talk) 14:40, 8 May 2012 (UTC)
Not only that. A major application of paper engineering creates the vast variety of practical and ingenious packaging of objects of all sorts and sizes, from the deceptively simple cardboard box to the ubiquitous and familiar egg box both of which are engineered to provide adequate strength to protect the contents and to allow stacking to the desired height while being as economical as possible to produce. This is a highly technical job involving knowledge of many different materials (even though all of them may be paper of some sort) and of the mathematics of structures. This is a far larger field than toys and books. treesmill (talk) 22:43, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
Subject: Proposal to disambiguate "Paper Engineering"
[edit]The current "Paper Engineering" article focuses primarily on paper manufacturing, while neglecting the important field of designing and creating structures and mechanisms using paper. This has led to confusion and an incomplete representation of the term.
I propose we:
- create a disambiguation page for "Paper Engineering," linking to two separate articles:
- Rename this page as "Paper Engineering (Manufacturing)", focusing on the industrial processes and engineering involved in paper production.
- Add "Paper Engineering (Structures and Mechanisms)": Dealing with the art, design and construction of objects and mechanisms using paper.
This approach would provide clarity and ensure that both aspects of "Paper Engineering" receive adequate coverage on Wikipedia.
Please share your thoughts and suggestions on this proposal.
