SSAR Circular 37
[edit]The article cites SSAR Circular 37 by Crother et al. to say that the SSAR "accepted the taxonomic change to Pantherophis". The ITIS website cites the same document to say exactly the opposite – i.e., it identifies all species names that use "Pantherophis" as "invalid" and it cites that same document when doing so. See, e.g., this report. It would be highly desirable to resolve this apparent contradiction. The online link in the article for the circular itself is a dead link. —BarrelProof (talk) 18:24, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
- Have a look at Circular 39 (see references in article). Dger (talk) 14:46, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, that's helpful. It confirms that the SSAR and several other organizations do accept Pantherophis (at least as of 2012). —BarrelProof (talk) 15:31, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
Status in ICZN
[edit]I have found various statements in online sources that say the ICZN rejected the Pantherophis classification proposal. There are so many places that say this that it seems to clearly be true. However, I have not found a sufficiently reliable source to cite to support this statement. It would be nice to find a sufficiently reliable source to cite about this. —BarrelProof (talk) 18:40, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
- I couldn't find any rejection in the scientific literature. Could it just be wishful thinking of Elaphe holdouts? HCA (talk) 23:25, 30 August 2015 (UTC)
- I just discovered an interesting edit by you. Do you recall it? —BarrelProof (talk) 00:09, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
- Vaguely, but that was 7 years ago. IIRC, at the time, there was only one study supporting it, but since there have been several other studies, though I admit I haven't kept up well with what they say about Pantherophis. HCA (talk) 12:57, 31 August 2015 (UTC)
