Comments regarding sourcing
[edit]- Sources of the British Raj era are not generally regarded as reliable. Many of the writers were gentlemen scholars who did not critically examine the data that they collected. A more recent source, within the last 30 years, would be better.
- A class handout is also probably not the best source. In this case, a better approach would be to find which of the texts listed in the bibliography section supports a certain fact, and use that for the citation.
You may wish to review WP:RS to learn about criteria for identifying reliable sources. Books and articles need to be published by a third party source with good editorial oversight and fact checking. For example, university press published books typically qualify as high quality WP:RS. If you are unsure as to whether a source qualifies, you can ask here, or at the reliable sources noticeboard. Also if you have any other questions. Good luck. JanetteDoe (talk) 19:01, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for detailed guidance. Peter J.Claus is Professor of Anthropology and Asian Studies [1], and I used his research as source.(as I could not find better sources, in English, right now.) Regarding British Raj sources, the suggestions given by you are relavant, thank you. I will try to find more reliable sources. Thank you.Rayabhari (talk) 06:35, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
- As somewhat of a compromise, in some situations I'd submit it's appropriate to quote some Raj depictions provided they're caveated as Raj-era data. So provided as historiography (the study of our understanding of history, the "history of history studies) vice historical fact. In a few articles I've made sections called "Colonial depictions" or similar, to clarify that we aren't supporting outdated racial theories, but are simply noting them for historical interest. - Rayabhari, my pleasure. Note that the site books.google.com can be a useful resource, with several caveats. First, snippet view is best avoided, as context is important. Second, what is viewable varies from country to country depending on copyright laws. So when discussing a source for a particular fact, it may be that not all participating editors are able to view the relevant page of the source volume, due to their location. Another resource is WP:RX. If you have the title, author, and pages for a certain book or periodical, the contributors there may be able to locate them for you.
