Reversion of addition of "Musical Styling section"
[edit]I reverted this section which states the following for the reasons outlined below:
"While Israeli Hip-hop talks about change and the future, Palestinian hip-hop exposes the lack of change in a dire present. It is usually used as a means of exposure, in a Shakurian sense, with regards to the harsh realities of growing up at the bottom of the Israeli socio-economic and political hierarchies. The stylistically ‘gangsta rap’ flow which characterizes Palestinian hip-hop is a commentary on the interpretably parallel experiences, and emotions, of living in the African American ghettos of the 1980’s/90’s and growing up in the Palestinian territories."
First of all, this is an article about Palestinian hip-hop, not a music review comparing Israeli with Palestinian hip-hop. Why should this article compare Palestinian hip-hop to Israeli hip hop any more than it is compared to Finnish or Nepalese hip hop?
Second, the claim it makes is not true or at least is very much out of date. If you listen to, for example, Ihda' the new album from DAM, it is extremely positive and forward-looking (tracks like N'ghayer Bukra). And yes, while it is true that Tupac and other American hip-hop artists were a big influence on Palestinian hip-hop, Palestinian artists have now clearly created their own style which incorporates many different influences including French hip-hop and traditional Arabic music. So this claim is also very narrow. Also, the first Palestinian hip-hop artists, widely acknowledged as DAM (among others) grew up in Israel, not in the occupied Palestinian Territories. --Tirpse77 (talk) 20:06, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Revisions to Palestinian Hip Hip Article as a whole
[edit]I am a student of Music in International Relations and will be editing this page. I believe there are quiet a few corrections and complements that should be added to have a complete and insightful article on this topic.
Corrections
There are a number of grammatical and spelling errors that could be fixed to correctly and accurately describe ‘Palestinian Hip Hop’. Some of the topic titles and the text must be corrected to flow freely while creating a clear description of Palestinian.
Complements
First, a clearer and more in-depth explanation to the term ‘Palestinian Hip Hop’ must be used in the introduction to accurately define the topic. Currently the introduction is focused around DAM and should have a broader more complete definition.
This article is limited in its single focus on DAM. While being the first and most recognized, I believe there is also a need to elaborate on the recent status of Palestinian hip-hop artists. This would include what they are doing now, larger concerts or any other recent events that has affected the overall sub genre of Palestinian hip hop. There have been numerous articles written about Palestinian hip-hop as well as personal interviews with artists, these should be used to expand on the topic.
Second, all the sub categories presently on the Wikipedia page can be expanded upon. The ‘transnational Palestinian Hip Hop’ section should include a greater context in which Palestinian artists are creating hip-hop. Under this area there should also be more mention and a clear description of where these artists are from, currently live and the topic within Palestine. It’s political ties and focus should be emphasized. There is no need to go directly into the political situation between the two states but this article and sub genre should be contextualized in the setting in which it is in.
Lastly, in addition to being clearer and unbiased, this article should include some of the criticisms that are drawn about Palestinian hip-hop and the challenges it has faced within the political sphere internationally. Like any other topic, Palestinian Hip Hop has received criticisms and these should be included as well.
