However, we cannot yet rule out the possibility that at least some aspects of catastrophization may actually be the product of an intense pain experience, rather than its cause. That is, the more intense the pain feels to the person, the more likely they are to have thoughts about it that fit the definition of catastrophization.[3]

This does not seem to be the direct conclusion of the study linked, the study is just wondering if the correlation is causation, in 1 singular direction that is, does catastrophizing increase expected pain and experienced pain. They did not question whether intense pain causes catastrophizing. However, there is a line that is relevant to what the wiki has written, they say that perhaps the correlations found are a reflection of a uncontrolled third variable.
