My name is John Chalos, second oldest son of the Mayor P. Pete Chalos featured in this entry (June 25,1927 - June 4,2006). I would like to make myself available as a resource for this entry. I can verify my identity by any means deemed necessary. First, I'd like to express my appreciation for the article. My father dedicated his life to public service both as a teacher and in government. His generation helped usher our community into the modern era and his administration succeeded in providing the community with job growth, increased public safety, clean parks, safe schools, solid infrastructure and a sense of pride during his tenure. Having assisted my father in the writing of numerous articles and the writing of three of his books (and myself having a BS degree in History from ISU), I feel qualified to speak about his legacy with respectful objectivity and an informed perspective.

My father, Pete Chalos, served on the Terre Haute City Council from 1972 to 1980, served as the Mayor of Terre Haute from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 1995. He also served as the President of the Indiana Democrat Mayors Association from 1983 to 1993. Prior to being elected to public office, he worked as a teacher (P.E. and History), a successful high school basketball coach and a school administrator; his career in education spanned thirty years. Upon losing in the primary election in 1995 to then Sheriff Jim Jenkins (who subsequently won the general election in the fall), Pete joined the staff of Ivy Tech Community College as a recruiter and a consultant. He worked for Ivy Tech from January 1, 1996 to August of 2002. Afterwards, he went on to self-publish four local books: Growing Up in Terre Haute (One Day at a Time) 1930-1945 by Pete Chalos, Just A Thought by Pete Chalos, Mayor by Pete Chalos and Speak Out by Pete Chalos. The most significant of the books was Mayor (238 pages; over 7,000 copies sold in a community of about 60,000) which documented for posterity his experiences in local politics. The book received a very positive review in U.S. Mayor, the annual publication of The United States Conference of Mayors ( http://usmayors.org/usmayornewspaper/documents/02_14_05/Terre_Haute.asp ). Pete also wrote a weekly column for a local direct mail newspaper (The Wabash Valley Emporium) in 2003 and 2004. When the small start-up newspaper folded, Max Jones, Editor of the Terre Haute Tribune Star ( http://tribstar.com/ ), asked Pete to start writing a weekly column for his newspaper ( http://tribstar.com/pete_chalos/ ), which he did from 2004 to 2006.

Some highlights from my father's career as mayor include: his entrance into the race for governor in 1983; his fight with the utility company Public Service Indiana over proposed rate increases to pay for their Marble Hill project which necessitated his cede from the race for governor but resulted in one of the largest settlements for the public from a utility company in the history of the United States (at the time) and the formation of the local Utility Rate Payer Trust; hosting political rallies for presidential candidates Senator Gary Hart and Senator Mike Dukkakis; meeting with Mikhail Gorbechev to organize local charity donations; and his delegation to Japan which resulted in Sony DADC locating their plant here in Terre Haute.

• My two siblings followed my father's example, entering into politics. Jim Chalos is serving on the Terre Haute City Council. Kathy Chalos-Miller is serving on the Vigo County Council.

PROD removal

PROD concern stated as: "Fails WP:GNG per WP:NPOL". WP:NPOL states:
"The following are presumed to be notable: ... Major local political figures who have received significant press coverage." And also, "Just being an elected local official ... does not guarantee notability, although such people can still be notable if they meet the general notability guideline." There does appears to be enough coverage, which could be included as sources in this article, for the subject to meet WP:GNG, or WP:NPOL through this point.
