Edgar Allan Poe

[edit]

I modified the claim that Degrand hired Poe as a reporter. The more precise information would be that he may have hired Poe as a clerk, and possibly as a reporter, and only for two weeks. The claim is noted by Mabbott in the 1969 edition of Poe's Poems, 1:539. There, Mabbott does not give his reasoning or sources, but his introduction to the 1941 facsimile edition of Tamerlane and Other Poems (p. xix-xx, n 9) refers to Theodore Pease's 1920 article in Outlook, which gives the recollection of Poe being hired for two weeks a clerk, without saying by whom. Mabbott makes the assumption that it was Degrand. The claim is possible, but not widely accepted. As for so much about Poe, it is complicated. Edgar A. Perry (talk) 22:32, 31 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
