Ideas for organization

[edit]

I'm thinking about these categories:

  • Lead paragraph: summarize. Address why this must be different than prescription drug counseling (due to the amount of info required from the Pt).
  • History: talk about the history of OTC counseling. Have pharmacists always done it? How has it changed?
  • Technique
    • Communication: discuss the communication skills employed. E.g. open vs. closed ended questions, empathy, tone of voice, vocab (Pt-friendly language), etc.
    • Strategies: discuss APhA's QuEST communication process.
  • Evidence: are there any reviews about studies on OTC counseling? Does it improve healthcare outcomes?
  • Perspective
    • Patients: how do Pts perceive OTC counseling? Do they see it as helpful, or unnecessary?
    • Physicians: how do physicians perceive OTC counseling? Is it helpful, or taking away business? Do they refer to pharmacists for this?
  • References
  • External Links: perhaps we can find some interesting resources for pharmacists.
