Kelley was called Art (his middle name) by his family. He was farming in Wright County on one of his father's farms when the war started. When his father, Jacob Edward Kelley, heard about him joining the Army he sought him out and asked "What do you expect me to do with this farm." Art replied, " I don't care. You can give it back to the Indians".
One time his father sent word by his brother for him to come into town to discuss something and he sent word back by his brother to tell him "It ain't no farther out here than it is into town" and he did not go.
Art was my Grandfather's brother and I can remember my Grandfather, Iris (Ike) Kelley, telling me these stories many times.
The road that runs by the place where Ova Art Kelley was born has been named Ova A Kelley Road in his honor. I live and continue to farm the land where he was born and raised. I was born almost 7 years after his death so I never got to meet him but he has always been one of my heroes.
