[edit]With regards to the derivation of "Ouistreham" from "Westerham": certainly this seems plausible, but why on earth would a Norman village have a Saxon/Old English placename?
- Because at around the 5th century, Saxons settled in the area, easy as that. Westerham is the historically correct name. 'Oysterham' is a theoretical translation without relation to the actual settling history and thus unlikely.
- No, History is more complex than that. See French Wikipedia. --AliceBzh (talk) 09:09, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

I realize the Norman Conquest opened up a lot of connections across the Channel, but I had thought it was pretty one-sided. --Saforrest 17:43, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
- No. Saxon settlers may predate William : could be Saxon settlers coming in the Viking invasion before the year 1000. --AliceBzh (talk) 09:09, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
All those in favor of calling it "Oyster Village" signify by saying "Aye". --Nosehair2200 (talk) 22:13, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
