[edit]He may have shaved five years off his age for reasons of career advancement. He appears on a list of arriving passengers on the SS Queen Mary on May 24, 1939; his birthdate is shown there as "2 December 1890" -- not the "1895" in the Wikipedia article. with a wife and child. Shaving years off an age for purposes in Hollywood is little of an offense in Hollywood, but a false statement on any immigration document has the potential for severe legal consequences. He apparently knew his original birthdate after he had started his Hollywood career and had cause to be honest about his original birthdate while signing a passenger manifest.
The birthdate on Wikipedia and IMDB are likely incorrect.

Another fact: a birthdate of 1890 also appears on his World War I draft card while he was in Montana:

Making false statements on any federal document has potentially serious consequences even for a trivial misstatement.

It's hard to fake the birth record, which shows 1890:

He also got married in 1911 to Pern Logan in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was shown marrying at age 20.
His death certificate in California shows his birthdate as December 2, 1890.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Pbrower2a (talk • contribs) 22:24, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
