Population of Ottawa

The population of Ottawa is now 900,000.

The "Ottawa" welcome sign that you see when you come from Gatineau and into Ottawa from the highway has been recently replaced and it now says 900,000.

Demographics

You have stated "The racial makeup of the city is .... Korean, 0.31% Other, 0.33% Multiple responses." but in fact you are mixing the catagories of race (eg white) and ethnicity (eg japanese). Use one or the other, and I would recommend ethnicity rather than race.

Can someone explain how the percentages in the "Ethnic Origin" table were derived? If you add up all of the percentages, they should sum to 100%. However, in the current table, the percentages add up to over 140%. Something is not right here...

Ahh, the old StatsCan problem. This stems from the way the census forms are worded. They allow multiple responses and I believe actually ask about "ancestry". StatsCan doesn't ask about "race" or "ethnicity" (they do have a "visible minority" question, which results are not shown here). Depending on which column you look at, you get different totals. Mayor Trial

Essentially, Wikipedia is not the news and any information added to a general article needs to be verifiable and notable. If this is going on right now, the actual significance may not yet be apparent. We also must adhere to WP:BLP which is the policy around information on living persons. If this turns into a major and significant historical issue, it can be added at a later date. freshacconci talktalk 16:16, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Infobox picture

A picture like this does not have the fair use issues.

The picture in the infobox does not seem to be a free image, it's being used under fair use rational. This doesn't really seem necessary - surely we can find a nice picture of he Ottawa skyline that is really free (incidentally, since a free alternative exists, I do not think the image that's there now really falls under "fair use" criteria). How about the image to the right that I found on commons? I don't like how it's kind of fuzzy and it doesn't show all that much of the city. Does anyone have a good picture that wraps up Ottawa that they could share? TastyCakes (talk) 17:21, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Change Picture?

I think the picture should be changed. Why not put a picture of Parliament Hill? Ottawa isn't known for it's skyscraper buildings so I don't think a few buildings that barely reach 100 m in the air should be shown . Parliament should be shown instead. The City of Ottawa website says that the population of Ottawa is 870,250 and not 812,000.

Generally all cities use their countries nationwide census, in our case the Canada 2006 Census as it is the most accurate gathering of population information. Hope this helps. Mkdw^talk 20:01, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Britannia Yacht Club

Someone made an article Britannia Yacht Club today; can someone knowledgeable about Ottawa lake a look at this, and see if it's really a) notable and b) whether it needs better integration with existing Ottawa/Ottawa River articles. Hazardous material sites

Most major cities have hazardous materials dumping sites, why on earth would anyone want to read about a dump ? It's irrelevant and unnecessary don't you think ? PhilthyBear (talk) 17:02, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

I must have not used the right terminology, Sorry. What I meant was not a dump, but large urban areas that have been contaminated by previous owners/residents, to the point where it costs too much to clean it up. Ottawahitech (talk) 08:27, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
