Private?
[edit]How can he be a private with all those stripes and chevrons? 84.23.155.84 (talk) 09:58, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Accuracy in editing.
[edit]I agree with the last person who posted; the caption accompanying the phot states is depicts Burkard "shortly after" having been awarded the Medal of Honor. If that is correct, then why is he wearing the rank insignia of what appears to be a First Sergeant as opposed to that of a Private?
In the 1800s and throughout the 1900s, it was not uncommon for a soldier to be promoted very rapidly and very high up the rank structure, especially after having performed and/or being decorated for an act of bravery. There are at least these few plausible explanations for the disparity:
- 1. Burkard may have been promoted as such, which requires the article to be edited stating as much,
- 2. Burkard was promoted PRIOR TO the act for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor, which requires the article to be edited stating as much,
- 3. The caption is incorrect, and the photo was NOT taken "shortly after" the act, which requires that the photo's caption to be edited,
Either way, someone (perhaps the original person who posted the article) should research, investigate, look into, etc, and clear up the discrepancies.
Thank you
