Picture, "Schematic illustration of the layers found in keratinized oral mucosa..."; Basement Membrane structure?

In that picture which has been used elsewhere, including in article about the Basement Membrane), what are the black circles with white centers shown in the BM, and why is it divided into horizontal sections, as if it is made up of cells? I don't think neither the circles nor the sectioning belong in the part of that illustration. UnderEducatedGeezer (talk) 00:43, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
